Keeva lives her life on the run, changing identities and personas. She is running from monsters she has never seen - vrykolakes, vampire creatures her father, Sandor, has told her stories about all her life. She had almost convinced herself that these monsters had all died in a volcano eruption on the island of Strongili long ago. But when a vrykolakas named Severin kills Mandy, her best friend, she discovers the vrykolakes are alive and well. Keeva knows about Severin from her father's stories, and her first impulse is to kill him and rid the world of the evil vrykolakas. She feels drawn to him however, and takes him prisoner. She hopes to better understand the vrykolakes and perhaps better understand herself. She is over two thousand years old. She doesn't know who or what she is, but she wants to find out. In order to do that, she has to discover her past. Severin might be the place to start looking for a connection to the past. Or, he could be the worst mistake Keeva has ever made.

Twenty years have passed since Keeva killed her grandfather, Delius. She drank in his powers and became the Queen of the Vrykolakes, known by the ancient Greeks as the bloodless vampires. She and Severin have settled into some semblance of a normal life, living in rural North America with their two kids, Connor and Kaie. Their neighbors would never suspect that they are anything more than a typical family. Aside from keeping their true identity a secret, everything seems to be going well. Until, their twelve year old daughter, Kaie, goes missing. Are monsters ever afraid of the dark? When Kaie finally awakens, she is no longer a child, and she is no longer in familiar surroundings. The Forbidding awaits. Echoes of madness surround her. The Belows warn of doom. Legend holds that whatever is born or brought into the Belows must remain there. Kaie vows to find a way to return to her family, but first she must learn to face her darkest fear, if she is ever to escape from the darkness below.

Race in the Vampire Narrative unpacks the vampire through a collection of classroom ready original essays that explicitly connect this archetypal outsider to studies in race, ethnicity, and identity. Through essays about the first recorded vampire craze, television shows True Blood, and Being Human, movies like Blade: Trinity and Underworld, to the presentation of vampires of colour in romance novels, graphic novels, on stage and beyond, this text will open doorways to discussions about Otherness in any setting, serving as an alternative way to explore marginality through a framework that welcomes all students into the conversation. Vampires began as terrors, nightmares, the most horrifying of creatures; now they are sparkly antiheroes more likely to kill your dog than drink you to death; commodified, absorbed, and defanged. Race in the Vampire Narrative demonstrates that the vampire serves as a core metaphor for the constructions of race, and the ways in which we identify, manufacture, and commodify marginalized groups. By drawing together disparate discussions of non-white vampires in popular culture, the collection illustrates the ways in which vampires can be used to explicitly help students understand ethnicity in the modern world making this the perfect companion text to any course from First Year Studies, Sociology, History, Cultural Studies, Women’s Studies, Criminal Justice, and so much more.

"Biting nonfiction about the creatures readers have found irresistible ever since Bram Stoker's Dracula. Authoritative, chilling, and complete, Lust for Blood is a hypnotic, popularly written history of vampires from their most ancient predations all over the world, up to and including 20th-century cases in America and in Europe. Revealing the various forms of vampires and their character, it also spells out the traditional methods men and women have used to protect themselves against the creatures of the night and how both clergy and laity have worked to destroy them. This book surveys not only the famous cases such as that of Countess Báthory, the 'Vampire Lady of the Carpathians", but details even more gripping tales of the undead, and interviews actual modern American vampires--people obsessed by their own lust for blood." --Back cover.
