Weeks before young Jacob Alson Long is set to graduate from Virginia's Halifax Military Academy, his older brother, Joseph, perishes in the Civil War. Being devastated by the loss, Jacob immediately joins the South's fight and becomes involved in the Masons. His father placing Jacob under "the Protection of the Apron," the ghost of his brother later appears and gives Jacob instructions that enable Jacob to perceive the war and its horrors. Joseph's ghost watches over his younger brother on the bloody battlefields. As the war continues, Jacob learns the ways of the Order of the Golden Knights, and his knowledge helping him to turn the tide at the Battle of Petersburg. He quickly rises through the Confederate ranks and is selected to serve in the secret signal corps. During Jacob's rise to Colonel he is inducted into a secret order, "The Knights of the Golden Circle". Then he becomes commander of a commando unit that operates underground during the last desperate months of the war trying to bring the North to its knee's. After the South is defeated, Jacob and his fellow Knights continue fighting, coming to the aid of their Masonic brother and president of the failed Confederacy, Jefferson Davis. Now, it's up to Jacob and his men to distribute gold to the South's Masonic lodges and continue the war against the oppressive troops of the North. His trials in battle, his struggle to maintain morality during this time of bloodshed and strife prepare him for his final conflict, life in the South during reconstruction.

The Senegalese author’s prize-winning novel explores brutality and resistance in a fictional North African city gripped by a fundamentalist regime. Under the regime of the so-called Brotherhood, two young people are publicly executed for having loved each other. In response, their mothers begin a secret correspondence, their only outlet for the grief they share. Spurred by The Brotherhood’s escalating brutality, a band of intellectuals seeks to foment rebellion by publishing an underground newspaper. Menawhile, the regime’s leader undertakes a personal crusade to find the responsible parties, and bring them to his own sense of justice. In Brotherhood, Mbougar Sarr explores how resistance and heroism can often give way to cowardice, all while giving voice to the personal struggles of each of his characters as they try to salvage the values they hold most dear. Winner of the French Voices Grand Prize, Prix Ahmadou Kourouma, and Grand Prix du Roman Métis

"[...]made. They do it abundantly; the stories bleed and groan before your eyes and ears, and smell to heaven; the bluntest, simplest, most formless stuff imaginable, but terrible in every fiber. Before I left prison I had accumulated a considerable number of these narratives, and had made many notes of things heard and seen-data and memoranda which I designed to use in the already projected book which is now in your hands. Such material, however, would have been confiscated by the Warden had its existence been known, and none of it would have been permitted to get outside the walls openly. The only thing to do, then, was to get it out secretly-by the "underground railroad." [...]."
