Excerpt from The Spitfire, Vol. 1 of 3: A Tale of the Sea "It cannot be, Herbert, it cannot be. I can neither relinquish my rights nor my hopes. You know how I have been wronged; you know how bitterly, how cruelly I have been used. My brother - and still he is my brother has - cheated me of my birthright; and, not contented with crushing me by poverty, has imbued the father of the girl - the only girl I ever loved - with such hatred against me, that I am considered as a dependent where I ought to be in affluence - an intruder where I might have been a son." Excerpt from The Spitfire, Vol. 3 of 3: A Tale of the Sea It sounds strangely in my ears, the re quest that I should marry your father, and you yourself are a mother you might call me your child's grandmother; and that, said Laura, archly, would make me look a young and inte resting bride. Although, my dear Laura, that might sound strangely, as you say, divest it of all imagination, and the difference is really nothing very alarming. My father married when he was only twenty, and, at this moment, I am not yet that, age you are nineteen - so that all the immense difference is only twenty years. Excerpt from The Spitfire, Vol. 3 of 3: A Tale of the Sea Four months had elapsed since the ball; not a tiding had been heard no - letter came to remove the doubts and despondency of Laura Mackenzie; and even Law's advice, as to her removal into Cornwall, had been unavailing. He had received no tidings of his client; but the secret cause in which he was retained, had, by his activity, become so certain, that had the mysterious stranger appeared, proceedings would instantly have been begun. I had a plan. Finish law school. Start a job. Stay away from men like Brandon Sterling. Cocky, overbearing, and richer than the earth, he thinks the world belongs to him, and that includes me.Yeah, no. Think again. It doesn't matter that his blue eyes look straight into my soul, or that his touch melts my icy reserve. It doesn't even matter that past all that swagger, there's a beautiful, damaged man who has so much to offer beyond private planes and jewelry boxes. But I had a plan: no falling in love. I just have to convince myself.

This first of two volumes on the Supermarine Spitfire covers the design, testing, development, and early WWII combat use of the famed British fighter aircraft's initial variants. The Spitfire in its original marques up to the Mk. VII provided a platform that allowed the Royal Air Force to challenge the German Luftwaffe's Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters during the 1939-1942 period of WWII. The book also covers the Seafire Marques I to III, which provided similarly valuable service for the British Navy's Fleet Air Arm.
