Excerpt from The Sleeping Beauty: A Play for Home Acting and Young Performers The mode of naming the infant Princess is made to be somewhat similar to the custom observed by the Ancient Greeks, as it would have been irreverent to make the slightest approach to our own baptismal rites. In the faraway land of Perrault, the young prince Florian has defied his tyrannical father's command and ventured outside the city walls into the mysterious Eastern Woods. Here he meets the beautiful fae-lady Matilda and the two fall in love and are soon married. In time, King Charles fell ill and left his land and title to his son, and King Florian and Queen Matilda ruled in peace with the fae-folk. It came to pass that Matilda and Florian discovered a curse lay upon them, placed there by Maurelle - the evil faery and mother of Matilda. She cursed them to never bear children. In sacrificing her magic, Matilda succeeded in bearing a daughter - whom they named Aurora. In revenge, Maurelle placed a worse curse upon the child - that when she reached 16 years of age she would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. King Florian and Queen Matilda entrusted the safety of their only daughter to the care of three good faeries - Fleur, Saffira and Alfreda. They took Aurora to the Eastern Woods where she would grow up in hiding. 16 years pass, during which time Queen Matilda loses her life to grief and Florian turns nearly mad with revenge. Aurora grows up graceful, beautiful and gentle. Soon the curse comes to pass - only a true loves kiss can break the spell as Aurora falls into an enchanted sleep.
