At first sight, a free trade agreement (FTA) between Switzerland and the United States seems implausible, but this important new study concludes that an FTA between the two countries would be highly worthwhile to both. As leading advocates of market capitalism, Switzerland and the United States are well situated to conclude an FTA that breaks new ground in dismantling barriers. The study finds that the annual GDP gains to each partner from expanded trade could be on the order of $1.1 billion.

The focus of this paper is the Sino-Swiss Free Trade Agreement. Which is also called the Swiss Chinese Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This paper aims to give a compact overview of the Sino-Swiss FTA. It looks at the impact this FTA has had on the Swiss economy and the Swiss political landscape. Furthermore, it will bring about the unique position and situation Switzerland is in whilst having an FTA with China during a trade war between China and the United States of America.

A joint conference was held in Washington in January, 1988, to assess the major features of the agreement. This volume includes the papers prepared for that conference, and the remarks of discussants on each paper. Our economy is shaped by trade and investment, first in local markets then in neighboring markets and now our economy is seen as international in scope. Individual governments have developed several approaches to address the realities of international markets. One model has been the General Agreement on Tariff and Trade (GATT), which uses a multinational approach to influence and regulate domestic trade policies and practices. A second approach is the binational approach undertaken by countries to solve particular problems and conflicts with one another. Finally, regional economies have recently developed trade agreements among themselves. In the past the United States has been reluctant to utilize international treaties to resolve international conflict. Recently however, the U.S. has entered into agreements with Israel in 1984-85, and Canada in 1987-88. These agreements were the forerunners to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) signed December 17, 1992. This commentary on John S. Evans Proceedings discusses the Objectives of NAFTA, the concepts and principles of NAFTA and the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement, as well as, questions and concerns that arise from their legitimacy.
