With uncommon insight, The Sage's Way uses the tradition of Oriental wisdom to explore such common subjects as acceptance, patience, power, self, grace, grief and laughter. Think of its Prologue and 64 Chapters as the Eastern philosophical equivalent of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet. Each chapter is composed of a teaching and a commentary. The teachings- from a mysterious sage of Mount Shan- are concise and dense, somewhat like the enigmatic pronouncements that might come from a reclusive mystic. The commentaries- offered by Old Shu, a remarkable hunchback living a life of contented simplicity- are wonderfully sensible and wise, somewhat like our own deepest awareness when we are introspective, honest, trusting and intuitive. The Sage's Way leads readers toward an awareness that will inspire inner strength and quiet serenity. This is the best of Oriental wisdom, the essence of both Taoism and Zen presented with a grounded clarity that is both deeply challenging and elegantly simple. As such, this book is likely to become a lifetime companion, offering day-to-day guidance while providing poignant readings for special occasions. Author of internationally sold books The Tao of Relationships, The Tao of Being, The Tao of Sailing, Zen Brushpoems, The Tao of Zen, The New Lao Tzu, Ray Grigg is eminently qualified to offer this work to those who are seeking a balanced and harmonious way through the sometimes bewildering challenges of ordinary life.

In The Sublime Way: the Sufi Path of the Sages of Makka, Shaykh Seraj Hendricks, Ust?dh Dr H.A. Hellyer and Shaykh Ahmad Hendricks, describe the path of the way of the scholars of Makka - ?ar?qa ?Ulam? Makka - who came from around the globe, and engaged with each other in that holy city. The authentic and indigenous spirituality of the Holy Cities has survived. This book is an authoritative Sufi guide in English transmitting the teachings of the great sage from the Holy City of Makka, Shaykh al-Sayyid Muhammad b. ?Alaw? al-M?lik? (d. 2004). This Meccan scholar represents one of the true inheritors of the Ghaz?l?an legacy in the modern age. The brotherhood follows the spiritual path of "self-purification (tazkiya), inner excellence (i?s?n) and the path (sayr) to God Most High" Shaykh Seraj Hendricks and Shaykh Ahmad Hendricks were khulafa- spiritual representatives - of the pre-eminent sage, Sayyid Muhammad b. Alawi al-Maliki, who was a prominent master of this way. This volume explains various practical aspects of Sufism, and provides the reader with both some of the litanies and practices of the order, while also introducing how it engaged with a particular community of Muslims in South Africa. Scholars from around the world have provided glowing recommendations for it, including the likes of Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad, Shaykh Muhammad Ninowy, Shaykh Afeefuddin al-Jailani, Dr Mona Hassan, and many others. "This is a book that I believe, Allah Willing, would please the souls of the noble scholar, al-Sayyid Muhammad b. ?Alaw? al-M?lik?, and that of his forefathers, for it shows how united the scholars of Makka were in their Sufism. Indeed, it's a very good explanation of the different facets of the path of Sufism, the way of the scholars of Makka - ?ar?qa ?Ulam? Makka - who came from around the globe and engaged with each other in such a beautiful way in Makka. May Allah bless the authors for their efforts, and may He allow us to benefit."? - Syed Hasan b. Muhammad bin Salem al-Attas, Imam, Masjid Ba'Alaw?e, Singapore

Master Sorai's Responsals was to eighteenth-century Japan what The Prince was to Renaissance Italy. Like Machiavelli, Ogyu Sorai (1666-1728) was a humanist scholar who served a prince (one of the shogun's chief lieutenants) and drew on his experiences as a house philosopher and on his vast knowledge of history and political affairs in his work. In 1720, when he began to write the letters that comprise this text, the Tokugawa regime was more than a hundred years old and beset with grave administrative and fiscal problems, about which Sorai had much to say.Samuel Yamashita's impressive translation of this work offers modern readers a rare glimpse of the prevailing political discourse of the day and the specific concepts that rulers had at their disposal as they struggled to manage their domains, find talented men for their bureaucracies, create new sources of revenue, and keep their subjects well fed and happy.Sorai himself, of course, is a presence in the text. He is by tunes earnest, frank, impatient, utterly confident, and occasionally condescending. Unlike his Renaissance counterpart, he is something of an optimist: he was convinced that the introduction of archaic Chinese culture and institutions to Japan would solve its myriad problems.Well-versed in Chinese history, philosophy, religion, medicine, and belles lettres, Sorai holds forth on everything from archaic Chinese divination to Sung poetry and prose. He offers advice on how to become a Confucian gentleman, how to learn to read classical Chinese, and which books to read and which to avoid. He even discusses his belief in a sentient, Chinese-style "heaven," a topic not well understood by modern scholars. Long regarded as one of Sorai's best works, Master Sorai's Reponsals bristles with the sharp and clear opinions of the most influential thinker of Tokugawa Japan.
