During the past two decades, the public has demanded that higher education demonstrate its value with concrete educational outcomes, and higher education is responding in a variety of ways. College student affairs, as an integral part of higher education, is working to help formulate this response and demonstrate its contribution to achieving appropriate learning outcomes for students. Although student affairs continues to function from a foundation of essential student services, the profession shows evidence of achieving new levels of educational activity. For at least twenty-five years, student affairs has been offering student development programming; now there is increased effort to enhance the campus learning environment, with emphasis on both affective and cognitive learning experiences. The authors believe that the profession of college student affairs has always been concerned with student learning but has been too prone to let others determine the nature of that learning, who is responsible for its occurrence, and how it can better be achieved. Discussion of the proper role for college student affairs in this all-important enterprise is increasing, and the result may be a new level of activity for the profession. This is the 75th issue of the journal New Directions for Student Services. For more information on the series, please see the Journals and Periodicals page.
