Yates, founder of the world's greatest wood-working machinery manufacturing industry, was born in Schenectady, New York, in 1854. His father, Joseph Yates, brought his small family to Wisconsin less than three months after the birth of the son Porter. The parents, with Porter Yates and his older sister Ella, reached Chicago by canal and lake boats and then drove overland to Berlin, Wisconsin.
