Purgatives, without some decided necessity, should be avoided. When the head continues much involved, a strong capsicum enema - a drachm of the powder to ten ounces of water - will often afford relief. The minor adjuvants in fever may also occasionally be resorted to with comfort and advantage. In these observations I have confined myself to the exposition of general principles, and altogether avoided cases, as I entirely concur with that eminent physician, Dr. William Stokes, whose Lectures on Fever' are unexcelled in the English or any other language, that you might as well expect to find two human beings exactly alike, as to find two cases of fever perfectly similar: - the varieties are infinite. There was never the slightest pain or discomfort in the joint at any time. On the fourth day, the dressing was changed, the joint looking, perhaps, a little fuller than its fellow, but there ms no trace of inflammatory change, and the wound was quite aseptic. The deep dressing was slightly stained with the int oozing. The dressing was renewed on the tenth day, and all the superficial sutures were removed. The wound was uncovered again on the nineteenth day, and found to be quite healed. The dressing was discontinued. Each has a definite and specific action; a certain time elapses after the reception of the substance into the system before morbid symptoms are developed; the severity of the symptoms varies with the dose of the substance introduced; the effects are modified by temperament or constitutional peculiarity on the part of the recipient; and after a time the substance is eliminated from the system.
