The book explores recent developments in the application of nanotechnology in the early detection of gastric cancer. It discusses various aspects, such as screening for gastric cancer-associated biomarkers; establishing new ultrasensitive detection methods based on nanoparticle labeling and nanoeffects; developing a new generation of nanodevices for high-throughput examination of serum and breath biomarkers; developing multifunctional nanoprobes for targeted imaging and simultaneous therapy of gastric cancer; evaluating the biosafety of multifunctional nanoprobes; and the establishment of a pre-warning and early diagnosis system. It also presents clinical applications and prospects. The book provides a valuable reference for researchers in nanomedicine and clinicians involved in gastric cancer and radiology.

Despite the fact that the incidence of gastric cancer is declining in the Western world, it remains a significant problem with respect to accurate diagnosis and treatment since it has a high mortality rate. In June 1989 an International Conference was held at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" entitled "New Trends in Gastric Cancer: Background and videosurgery". During this meeting background information on the aetiopathogenesis of gastric cancer was presented together with talks and video presentations on the latest advances in the treatment of gastric carcinoma, both from the European and Japanese experience. Because of the poor prognosis of gastric carcinoma there is increasing pressure for early detection. Some of the problems in the early detection of gastric carcinoma are discussed together with methods of surveillance of high-risk subjects. It is generally accepted that the surgical approach to gastric carcinoma should take into account the site and extent of the lesion and there are chapters on new methods for pre and intraoperative staging of the disease which allow a more logical approach to surgery. A comparison between Japanese and Western rule and results was attempted and reasons for the differences were investigated. Since the field is still evolving not all aspects could be covered, and those angles not approached in this book will be addressed in a second International Conference to be held in Rome in June 1990.

This book focuses on early diagnosis of the morphological changes in gastric mucosa, which are believed to be precursors for gastric cancer development. The use of modern imaging techniques in order to reveal and treat early cases of gastric cancer is also discussed. In addition, this book reviews modern data on gastric cancer prevention by means of screening gastric precancerous conditions and changes, as well as estimating the risk of gastric cancer development in individual patients with subsequent proper management for reducing the possibility of neoplastic progression.

Early diagnosis of cancer and other non-oncological disorders gives a significant advantage for curing the disease and improving patient's life expectancy. Recent advances in biosensor-based techniques which are designed for specific biomarkers can be exploited for early diagnosis of diseases. Biosensor Based Advanced Cancer Diagnostics covers all available biosensor-based approaches and comprehensive technologies; along with their application in diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic management of various oncological disorders. Besides this, current challenges and future aspects of these diagnostic approaches have also been discussed. This book offers a view of recent advances and is also helpful for designing new biosensor-based technologies in the field of medical science, engineering and biomedical technology. Biosensor Based Advanced Cancer Diagnostics helps biomedical engineers, researchers, molecular biologists, oncologists and clinicians with the development of point of care devices for disease diagnostics and prognostics. It also provides information on developing user friendly, sensitive, stable, accurate, low cost and minimally invasive modalities which can be adopted from lab to clinics. This book covers in-depth knowledge of disease biomarkers that can be exploited for designing and development of a range of biosensors. The editors have summarized the potential cancer biomarkers and methodology for their detection, plus transferring the developed system to clinical application by miniaturization and required integration with microfluidic systems. - Covers design and development of advanced platforms for rapid diagnosis of cancerous biomarkers - Takes a multidisciplinary approach to sensitive transducers development, nano-enabled advanced imaging, miniaturized analytical systems, and device packaging for point-of-care applications - Offers an insight into how to develop cost-effective diagnostics for early detection of cancer
