This book contains some two thousand five hundred technical words, etc., mostly relating to letterpress printing. It will surprise many persons that it has been possible to collect so many, but Mr. Jacobi has evidently spared no pains to gather in all he could possibly find. In, perhaps, a few instances he has included words scarcely cognate to his subject, such for instance as "Dextrine - a cheap substitute for gum," where neither the word itself, nor the explanation are quite satisfactory; but this is one of the few doubtful entries we have found in the vocabulary. It is a book which must have taken a great deal of trouble to compile, and which will be both of interest and use to all who have to deal with printers or printing. At the end is a specimen of a corrected proof. We congratulate Mr. Jacobi on the volume. -The Reliquary and Illustrated Archaeologist, A Quarterly Journal, Volume 4 [1890] The Printers' Vocabulary is another of Mr. Jacobi's useful manuals. The author has the great advantage of understanding what he is talking about, and has compiled a book a printer should keep on his shelf for reference, and authors too may consult it with advantage. We may suggest that in a second edition the exact date of the introduction of the machines mentioned should be given when possible. We observe that Mr. Jacobi has not succeeded any more than anyone else in discovering the etymology of "chapel."-The Athenæum [1889]

Excerpt from The Printers Vocabulary: A Collection of Some 2500 Technical Terms, Phrases, Abbreviations and Other Expressions Mostly Relating to Letterpress Printing, Many of Which Have Been in Use Since the Time of Caxton My little volume of last year, "The Printers' Handbook of Trade Recipes, etc.," having met with a greater success than I had anticipated, I venture to offer the accompanying work as a small addition to our literature on Printing, trusting that it may be found useful for reference purposes, and especially so to those workers who are desirous of becoming acquainted with the terms, phrases, etc., used in the departments other than those they are employed in - the increasing tendency nowadays to subdivision of labour making it a somewhat difficult matter to acquire the expressions of the other branches of the trade. It may also be of service to publishers, authors, and others connected directly or indirectly with our craft, in making more clear the detail necessary between customer and tradesman. I trust due allowance will be. made for any possible difference of opinion in expressing the many brief definitions here attempted - circumstances and locality sometimes allowing of a slightly different construction - though, in the main, the same explanation.
