The unfortunate deaths of her mother and cousin had Elainne being sent to her aunt and uncle's kingdom to be trained up as the future heir to the throne. Before she can cement her place as crown princess of the realm the daughter of the ocean, a mermaid princess, comes along intent to steal the throne from her. The ritual to find Caitlyn's father Prince Craven failed, now she must wait another month to try again. Her grandmother Queen Ciara suggests she try and pass the time by learning how to fight and assigns the lion-tailed guard Orthrin to be her teacher. Things get off to a great start but when Liam reveals to her that he knows who drugged them, they get into a fight and Caitlyn wonders if they'll ever recover. As she wanders the Mound, wishing she could take back what she said to Liam she runs into Rush, the door guard. He takes her outside to get her mind off Liam and she learns that Rush was her father's best friend, born in the same year they hardly spent a day apart. The more time they spend together the stronger their bond becomes and soon the Mound sees fit to make sure they are never parted. As her entourage grows so does her curiosity about her father's family. After an attempted assassination goes wrong Caitlyn learns she has an uncle, though his current position in life means the Queen wouldn't see him as such. As unfair as it seems to her, Lin seems happy with his lot in life. He helps give her memories of her father that no one else could give her. It only fuels her determination to find him, to find the one who took him and make sure they get the punishment they deserve.
