Excerpt from The Practical Stenographer: A New and Practical System of Shortband It is needless to expatiate on, or to show the importance of a knowledge of Stenography, did it only extend so far as to be applied to keep anything particular to one's self, to take notes, or make memoranda, etc. For the Art a great deal has been said, and though a great deal, not one superfluous word; but this cannot be remarked of what has been said on it! Among arts, Stenography is second to none; and it should, long before this, have made universal acquaintance. Why has it not? Mastery is the reward of perseverance; and perseverance and patience Stenography requires: but neither the one nor the other can be secured without encouragement; and some of the works on Shorthand are so long and ponderous, and their requisite explanations, etc., given with such circumlocution, - as if it were endeavoured, as with many other arts, to mysterize and make the thing more prodigious, - that, instead of interesting and encouraging, they are really enough to frighten any novice.
