Some thousands of years ago, the world was home to an immense variety of large mammals. Devouring their way down the food chain as they spread across the planet, they began a process of voracious extinction that has continued to the present. In 1980 Nobel Laureate Luis Alvarez announced his theory of the dinosaurs final demise: a gigantic meteorite crashed into the earth and raised a cloud of dust that caused darkness for years, suppressing photosynthesis, which impeded plant growth, and eventually starved the dinosaurs.
