Excerpt from The Phoenix, 1926, Vol. 31 In spite of the fact that every student worked two days a week on the school farm, the Trustees were soon perilously involved in financial troubles; so in 1842 the General Assembly voted to move Cumberland from Princeton, and invited offers from towns wishing the advantages of a college. Lebanon made the highest bid, and took the newly acquired institution into its care at once. A charter was obtained in 1843, and 1844 found Cumberland College well situated in a new building, with the more dignified name of Cumberland University. It is interesting to know that the first official publication was a twenty-one page rule book, issued in 1843. Such regulations as the following may seem strange to the mod ern mind, but they are actually found in this first bulletin. Excerpt from The Phoenix, Vol. 5: A Magazine of Individuality; July, 1916 Of course, New York has the finest hotels in the world, as well as the biggest and grandest, but they seem to me to have one trifling fault, viz., humanity has been modernized out of most Of them, in deference perhaps to the Dollar-wor ship which they exhibit in a kind Of hieratic degree. Excerpt from Phoenix, 1907, Vol. 1 Finally, we may say that the key-note to this model man's useful and well rounded life may be found in the motto he once expressed for the guidance of the young to large usefulness in the conduct of the movements of life. This was: A spirit of helpfulness to others and a supreme devotion to personal duty will win anything here that is worth winning. Excerpt from The Phoenix, 1897, Vol. 3 This year closes with eight students looking forward for advancement. Some have record for faithful service; others for lack of faithful service. Here we are upon the threshold of the Junior Year. We shudder at the thought Junior for as many who have gone before, tell us of the much dreaded Professor Buck and his calculus, and assure us a reception as cold as the climate of Siberia; they tell us that this is the Slough of Despond over which few can ever hope to pass. Having put hand to plow, however we venture to stem the tide. But we are not the only ones to try the realities of the dreaded work four new members have joined the ranks. Dickey hails from West Tennessee. His serious manner and studious habits, despite his extreme youth soon tell that he means to succeed not only as a student in college, but also in his chosen profession as a lawyer. Excerpt from Green Book, 1926, Vol. 3 For the faintest gleam of warning From the lights along the shore. Tis a darkness that stirs itself gently, That makes tiny white-caps appear, It causes the captain to shudder, And think of his home so dear. His shaggy brow grows troubled, As he anxiously peers through the mist For that lower light that is burning, That light he must have missed.
