The intertwining careers of William Torrey Harris (1835-1909) converge in twelve of the Annual Reports of the Board of Directors for St. Louis Public Schools. Harris formulated most of the essential features of these twelve reports as the Superintendent of Schools from 1867 to 1869. These particular reports--which have been acclaimed nationally and internationally--are said to be among the most valuable official publications in American educational literature. They are far different from the descriptive documents originally intended by their author. This study demonstrates that Harris provided an authentic philosophy of education, a set of interrelated philosophical principles and their applications to educational problems. The substance of Harris's philosophy of education is focused upon a broadly based philosophical anthropology in relationship primarily to the purposes, curriculum, and teaching methods in intellectual, moral, and religious education.

This work traces the impact of a differentiated curriculum on girls' education in St. Louis public schools from 1870 to 1930. Its central argument is that the premise upon which a differentiated curriculum is founded, that schooling ought to differ among students in order prepare each for his or her place in the social order, actually led to academic decline. The attention given to the intersection of gender, race, and social class and its combined effect on girls' schooling, places this text in the new wave of critical historical scholarship in the field of educational research.

This volume traces the history of Western philosophy of education through the Modern Era. The period between 1850 and 1914 was a time of struggle for justice and opportunity, during which influential thinkers – among them, John Dewey, Maria Montessori, and W.E.B. Du Bois – addressed how education is fundamentally connected to questions of what it means to be human. Readers will find a provocative collection of educational theories and concepts that point to the inherent value of the diversity of human experience and background. Each chapter illuminates how the ideas of the modern era hold promise for a meaningful re-envisioning of educational practice and policy today. About A History of Western Philosophy of Education: An essential resource for researchers, scholars, and students of education, this five-volume set that traces the development of philosophy of education through Western culture and history. Focusing on philosophers who have theorized education and its implementation, the series constitutes a fresh, dynamic, and developing view of educational philosophy. It expands our educational possibilities by reinvigorating philosophy's vibrant critical tradition, connecting old and new perspectives, and identifying the continuity of critique and reconstruction. It also includes a timeline showing major historical events, including educational initiatives and the publication of noteworthy philosophical works.

Early childhood education is fundamental to a child's later educational achievements and future success. The principles and practices of modern early childhood education have their origins in the past. While the educators who built the field have been the subject of many detailed studies, previous works do not provide adequate coverage of primary and secondary sources, multicultural educators, or more recent leaders in the discipline. This reference book provides biographies and annotated bibliographies of more than 30 pioneers in early childhood education from Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670) and John Locke (1632-1704), to Maria Montessori (1870-1952), Leland B. Jacobs (1907-1992), and Lillian Weber (1917-1994). Special attention is given to multicultural educators, including Mary Church Terrell (1863-1954) and her work with The National Association of Colored Women. Biographies are arranged alphabetically, and each is followed by annotated bibliographies of primary and secondary sources. An introductory essay briefly discusses the history of early childhood education from the 17th century to the present. The following biographies are arranged alphabetically, and each includes a brief summary of the subjects contributions to the field of early childhood education. Each biographical sketch is followed by annotated bibliography of primary and secondary sources, including obituaries, articles, dissertations, and books. Works were selected because they represent the most interesting and informative sources by and about the educators. The volume closes with a chronological listing of the pioneers and a selected bibliography of general works on early childhood education.
