This is the story of the Ontario Military Hospital which was built in Orpington, Kent in 1916. The hospital was extended in 1917 and became the No.16 Canadian General Hospital. In 1919 the hospital was taken over by the Ministry of Pensions and later by Kent County Council. In 1948 Orpington Hospital became part of the NHS. Today only the Canada Wing remains.

This is the story of the 110 Canadian Great War soldiers who died at Orpington Hospital and / or were buried at Canadian Corner or All Saints, Orpington.

These experienced professional nurses left their friends, families, and jobs to enlist in the army. Granted relative rank and equal pay to men, they had a mandate to salvage as many sick and wounded men as possible for return to the front lines. Nothing prepared them for poor living conditions, the scale of casualties, or the type of wounds they encountered, but their letters and diaries reveal that they were determined to soldier on under all circumstances while still “living as well as possible.”
