Excerpt from The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 25: July 1929 The epidemic among the Oberlin College students offered many inter esting points for observation. As it progressed steadily eastward it he came evident early in December that we should prepare to combat the dis ease before it actually commenced its invasion of Oberlin. We recognized the fact that even though the epi demic invaded Oberlin before Christ mas there was a stronger probability that immediately following the vaca tion the situation would be still more serious and unless we made plans to meet it we might find ourselves hone lessly overwhelmed upon the reopen ing of College in January. Excerpt from The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 24: April 1928 There has been a similar broad and critical scrutiny of the melodies to which the poems are set. The editor has retained a large number of the standard tunes found in the best song books of the various denominations, which have become embedded in the tradition of the churches of England and America. To these have been added compositions of present com posers of high standing, so recent that the previous books do not con tain them. Among these are gems of musical expression which need to be heard once to be ever after he loved. A very striking feature is the number of recent poets whose names appear. This hasty summary is enough to show that this unique volume is more than a hymnal in the ordinary sense of the word. Some of the songs are not religious in the usual strict con notation, as for example, Stevenson's. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 25: November, 1928 After a week of gorgeous weather, Home-coming day on Saturday, Oc tober 13, was dull and a little cool. But it did not discourage many of those who had made their plans to come to Oberlin, for by noon the town was full of cars and the streets alive with people, half familiar, half strange. They were arriving from Boston, New York, Chicago, from Buf falo, Pittsburgh and Rochester, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Toledo and by the scores from nearer cities. The town was hung with flags and bunting in Oberlin's crimson and gold and Wooster's black and gold, and Welcome Alumni and Welcome Woos ter signs were everywhere. The real feature of the morning were the boarding house decorations which were judged at noon. The members of the various houses had been working on them since the dark hours of the morning, and anxiously scanning the skies for possible dam age. The silver cup went for the second time to Delta Lodge, who portrayed Oberlin's Aerial Attack, an Oberlin plane with roaring engine bombing the Wooster campus with a football bomb, having left Akron smoldering in ruins in the distance. Excerpt from The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 4: January, 1908 During the years from 1896 to 1904 he was acting president of the college. His administration was wholesome and sympathetic. For many years he occupied the position of Dean of the Theological Department in addition to his duties as professor. One purpose has dominated the life of Professor Andrews from his first entrance upon this work during the entire thirty-three years of his active and efficient service. This one purpose has been to give to the students who came under his instruction the best that he could provide them through study and meditation and observation. He went twice to Europe, on one occasion extending his journey to Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Asia Minor and Greece. He gathered from original sources useful and profound knowledge which he gave out with the abandon of a great desire to help others in the classroom and on the lecture platform. More than two hundred pupils have come under his immediate direction in the department over which he presided. Ministers who have gone out from his classes are scattered through the southern states and some have found their way into northern pulpits. His early ministry at Marion, Alabama, where remarkable revival awakening followed his preaching left a permanent and profound effect upon his future preaching and in struction. As a result of this ministry at Marion there were more than four hundred conversions. The succeeding classes of students who came under his influence felt the effect upon the life of their teacher of this uplifting experience.
