Inspiring success stories can spark your productivity, strengthen your leadership, propel you on the road to your own success. And when those stories are told by the very people who have attained success despite odds big or small, people who have conquered their own self-doubts and adversity in their careers, they can set you on fire and get you going in earnest to become more productive and successful yourself. This book will get you intimately acquainted with the real-life narratives and wisdom of 17 of the country’s finest professional motivational gurus and experts, all of whom are members of the Philippine Association of Professional Speakers (PAPS). Sure, they’re often first to admit that they are far from perfect role models, but what they’ve learned and gone through over the years to get them started—whether as “barker” to call out the numbers in raffle draws, as a young girl in grade school selling yema and polvoron to classmates simply because she loved talking to people and making sales pitches, or as a struggling marketing wannabe twice refused membership in a profession organization because he simply didn’t know how to speak before big audiences—are compelling testaments to their untiring efforts to achieve excellence and productivity. In taped interviews the featured motivational speakers in this book answer such probing questions as these five: "How did you start as a professional speaker?" “What is your core message?” “What makes a person productive?” “What does it take to be a person of influence?” “What are your three keys for success?” Their answers—some pleasantly familiar but very revealing on who they thought they were and what they wanted to be, some totally unexpected because they seem to have come right out of the blue—show the many faces of the quest for productivity that are now distilled in this one-of-a-kind book about success.

Development is not a purely economic phenomenon; it also has a strong sociological element. The Many Faces of Socioeconomic Change explores how economic socio-cultural and political aspects of human progress have been studied since the time of Adam Smith. Surveying narratives of how development occurs, from early evolutionary models to recent types of development theory, it outlines the main long-term changes in how socioeconomic development has been envisaged through time. The Many Faces of Socioeconomic Change presents the argument that socioeconomic development emerged with the creation of grand evolutionary sequences of social progress that were the products of Enlightenment and mid-Victorian thinkers. By the middle of the twentieth century, when interest in accelerating development gave the topic a new impetus its scope narrowed to a set of economically based strategies. After 1960, however, faith in such strategies began to wane, in the face of indifferent results and a general faltering of confidence in economists' boasts of scientific expertise. In the twenty first century, development research is being pursued using research methods that generate disconnected results. As a result, it seems unlikely that any grand narrative will be created in the future and that Neo-liberalism will be the last of this particular kind of socioeconomic theory. With a broad scope of content and clear exposition of academic thinking this book guides the reader through the way in which the policy adopted as a consequence of modern theories has been less effective because of the neglect or a misunderstanding of the social context within which they operate.

The built environment affects our physical, mental and social well-being. Here renowned professionals from practice and academia explore the evidence from basic research as well as case studies to test this belief. They show that many elements in the built environment contribute to establishing a milieu which helps people to be healthier and have the energy to concentrate while being free to be creative. The health and well-being agenda pervades society in many different ways but we spend much of our lives in buildings, so they have an important role to play within this total picture. This demands us to embrace change and think beyond the conventional wisdom while retaining our respect for it. Creating the Productive Workplace shows how we need to balance the needs of people and the ever-increasing enabling technologies but also to take advantage of the healing powers of Nature and let them be part of environmental design. This book aims to lead to more human-centred ways of designing the built environment with deeper meaning and achieve healthier and more creative, as well as more productive places to work.
