Excerpt from My Church, Vol. 6: An Illustrated Lutheran Manual The unfaltering article of faith which the Synod adopted at its organization reads as follows: As holding the common Christian faith and especially as Evangelical Lutherans, this Synod acknowledges that the Holy Scrip tures are the revelation of God's Word, and the only perfect rule and guide for the faith and life of humanity; and retains and confesses not only the oldest three Symbols, the Apostolic, the Nicene, and the A thanasian Creeds, but also the unaltered Augsburg Confession, as a short but true summary of the chief doctrines of the Christian faith, nnderstood in harmony with that development thereof which the rest of the Symbolical books of the Lutheran Church contain. This article is not to be changed. Prof. L. P. Esbjb'rn was elected as rector of the Theo logical Seminary, and the Norwegian Lutheran church in Chicago donated a location for it during the first year. The number of students that year was sixteen, eight Swedes and eight Norwegians. At the first synodical meeting there were thirteen Swedish and six Norwegian pastors together with fourteen laymen present. Five Swedish and three Norwegian candidates were ordained at the same meeting. The union between the Swedes and the Norwegians was dissolved at the meeting of the Synod in A ndover, Ill., in 1870.
