Excerpt from Book of Worship With Tunes: Published by the General Synod of the Lutheran Church in the United States In some instances - where the relation has not been so well determined by usage, or where it was believed' to be merely provincial, or not founded on the best judgment the Committee has used its own discretion, and separated or combined in manner which may not always meet the approval of those who have been accustomed to a certain local usage, or to associations of music and words growing out of peculiar circumstances and experiences. At all events, there must always be in a question so delicate and largely subjective as that concerning the agreement of a tune to a hymn, a great diversity of judgment and taste among different persons even of good practical and musical discernment and appreciation. To meet this condition, the Committee has, as far as was possible, offered more than one tune on the same page to the same hymn.
