"Dillon Wallace (1863-1939) was an American lawyer, outdoorsman, author of non-fiction, fiction and magazine articles. His first book, The Lure of the Labrador Wild (1905) was a best-seller, as were many of his later books. ... In 1900 Dillon Wallace met Leonidas Hubbard, an assistant editor with Outing magazine.[1] Hubbard asked Wallace to join him on an exploratory trip through Labrador, the plan was to follow the Naskaupi River to Lake Michikamau, a region that had yet to be explored by Europeans. They departed in July 1903, but took the wrong river from the very start, following the much smaller and more difficult Susan River. Short on supplies, with winter coming on, Hubbard became ill and died of starvation. Wallace made it back alive."--Wikiped., June 2014.

Together with their Indian tour guide George Elson, Leonidas Hubbard and Dillon Wallace set out in 1903 to explore a part of Labrador that had not yet been thoroughly explored by Europeans. They followed the Susan Valley instead of the Nascaupee River River in their quest to investigate Lake Michikamau, which led them into the heart of Labrador and onto a course for which they were unprepared. The three guys immediately discovered that their adventure was rapidly turning into a battle for their lives as the chilly winter winds began to blow. I was engrossed in this book and wondered how anyone could have made it through this ordeal. It is nice to read of Dillon's courage and strength. Incredibly, they didn't grumble despite having to carry 100-pound loads of gear and a canoe while eating little to no food and walking through snow in only moccasins. They also lifted each other's spirits by sharing bible tales and anecdotes about their homes.

In July 1903 Leonidas Hubbard set out to explore the uncharted interior of Labrador by canoe, accompanied by Dillon Wallace, his best friend, and George Elson, a Métis guide. Bad luck and bad judgment led the expedition into disaster and the party was forced to turn back. Hubbard died of starvation just thirty miles from camp. Two years later Wallace decided to complete the overland expedition and clear himself of blame for Hubbard's death. He had, however, a rival - Mina Hubbard. She blamed Wallace for her husband's death and, with Elson as her guide, intended to complete the trek first. The result was an epic race between the avenging widow and her husband's best friend. Reconstructing the story from the long-lost journals and diaries of the 1903 and 1905 expeditions, James Davidson and John Rugge trace the explorers' routes and re-create the saga. Great Heart is a gripping drama of individuals pushed to the limits of human endurance.

The Lure of the Labrador Wild by Dillon Wallace Three years have passed since Hubbard and I began that fateful journey into Labrador of which this volume is a record. A little more than a year has elapsed since the first edition of our record made its appearance from the press. Meanwhile I have looked behind the ranges. Grand Lake has again borne me upon the bosom of her broad, deep waters into the great lonely wilderness that lured Hubbard to his death.
