Imagine this scenario. Why is it that psychologists, philosophers, and Neuroscientists know so much about the brain and mind but mental health is getting worse? The results of mental health are how they are because of so-called experts. Our current attempts to impact mental health in any given situation are based on and bounded by our current explanation for mental health that was given to us by the experts. Our current explanations have been derived from and bounded by today's social model. The result is, our access to creating mental health is shaped by that social model of mental health. We do not want explanations about mental health; what we want is actual mental health. An explanation is defined as a reason or justification for an action or belief. Access is defined as a means of approaching or entering a place. That is what a result is; that is what we want for you. We do not want to know about mental health; what we want is an actual healthy mentality. This book will do that for you!!!

Our brains are doing our best to help us out, but they can be real assholes sometimes. Sometimes it seems like your own brain is out to get you—melting down in the middle of the grocery store, picking fights with your date, getting you addicted to something, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. You already told your brain firmly that it isn't good to do these things. But your brain has a mind of its own. That's where this book comes in. With humor, patience, and lots of swearing, Dr. Faith shows you the science behind what's going on in your skull and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately to the non-emergencies of everyday life. If you're working to deal with old traumas, or if you just want to have a more measured and chill response to situations you face all the time, this book can help you put the pieces of the puzzle together and get your life and brain back. Here's an excerpt from the book:Knowing what’s going on up in your brain is HUGE. So much of how we interact with the world around us is a completely normal response when we take into account our past experiences and how our brains work. • Freaking the fuck out • Avoiding important shit we need to take care of • Feeling pissed off all the time • Being a dick to people we care about • Putting shit in our bodies that we know isn’t good for us • Doing shit we know is dumb or pointlessNone of these things are fucking helpful. But they all make sense.Your brain has adapted to the circumstances in your life and started doing things to protect you, bless it. It’s not TRYING to fuck you over (even though it totally is, at times). As we navigate the world, nasty shit happens. The brain stores info about the nasty shit to try to avoid it in the future. Sometimes these responses are helpful. Sometimes the responses become a bigger problem than the actual problem was. It’s called a trauma reaction. And even if you aren’t dealing with a specific trauma? Adaptive coping strategies, bad habits, and funky behaviors all wire in similar ways. And research is showing that these issues are actually some of the easier ones to treat in therapy … if we address what’s really going on, rather than just the symptoms.

This book is a basic and easy to follow guide to helping yourself out of depression and other related mental health issues. This is actually a short and very basic version of a longer work currently in progress. It represents the passion I have discovered as a result of my experiences with depression and other related illnesses. I decided to turn the experiences and what I have learned into a project that we hope can give others hope and help people feel less depressed, more whole and happier in their own lives. Not only did I suffer from severe clinical grade depression, I also suffered from PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks, drug and alcohol addiction for three years and severe anxiety. I took psych meds for ten to fifteen years. In addition, I also lost two family members, a younger sister and a nephew, to suicide. As a result of my journey I would like to share what I discovered and what I feel are some very practical and natural ways to reduce our depression and emotional suffering, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, mental illness and other related issues, as well as to improve our whole life and not just one part of it. I am not against using medication to help us heal but I also wanted to be able to look at and remove the causes of my depression and illnesses in addition to using only the medication. I feel that I have succeeded and I no longer need to use medication to feel healthier, happier and more whole. I have spent the better part of the last fifteen years researching, studying, experimenting and using methods other than traditional methods of medication and counseling into my life in order to recover from my depression and related issues. I do feel that there are ways to help our lives and thus the world get out of depression and suffering and that we can heal our bodies, our minds and our spirits with some effort and perhaps some new ways of looking at life. It is my hope that this effort of mine will bring some relief to those who are suffering and to give others new choices that they may not realize are available in the area of mental health and mental, or spiritual, illness as I like to call it.

A bestseller for over 20 years, I Don’t Want to Talk About It is a groundbreaking and hopeful guide to understanding and destigmatizing male depression, essential not only for men who may be suffering but for the people who love them. Twenty years of experience treating men and their families has convinced psychotherapist Terrence Real that depression is a silent epidemic in men—that men hide their condition from family, friends, and themselves to avoid the stigma of depression’s “un-manliness.” Problems that we think of as typically male—difficulty with intimacy, workaholism, alcoholism, abusive behavior, and rage—are really attempts to escape depression. And these escape attempts only hurt the people men love and pass their condition on to their children. This groundbreaking book is the “pathway out of darkness” that these men and their families seek. Real reveals how men can unearth their pain, heal themselves, restore relationships, and break the legacy of abuse. He mixes penetrating analysis with compelling tales of his patients and even his own experiences with depression as the son of a violent, depressed father and the father of two young sons.
