Excerpt from The Life of Nathaniel Macon The raison d'etre of a biography of Nathaniel Macon is to be found in the unique and also important role he played in our national life and in the great sectional contest which filled the first half of the nineteenth century. No comprehensive life of Macon has ever been attempted. A half dozen news paper articles, and of recent years a few semi-scientific sketches of his career, have been published; and some letters of Macon with introductions and notes have appeared since the writer began his searches for materials. But none of these have given more than a glimpse of the able leader and astute politician who so long held the first place in the political affairs of North Carolina. In the midst of the duties of a teacher of history, the author has tried to get together the scanty materials bearing on Macon's life, and to draw from these a picture of his rise to prominence in North Carolina during and just after the Revolution, of his activity as an ardent Jefferson republican, which brought him to the Speakership of Congress, of his long and determined opposition to Clay's American system, and finally of his share in the Jackson campaigns. How well this self-imposed task has been done, how accurately the picture of the real Macon has been drawn, is for the reader to determine. But one thing at least may be said of the work: it has been attempted, and with the attempt some of the materials of North Carolina's history have been collected and put within the reach of the public. Excerpt from Memoir of Nathaniel Macon, of North Carolina His love for North Carolina was sincere and thorough. In all that concerned her character - her institutions - her welfare, he felt an ever wakeful solicitude. Although he received his collegiate education in a distant State, he ever after gave a decided preference to the seminaries of his own loved North Carolina. When his son in law, William Eaton, Sen' r, in the year 1823, Was about to send two of his sons to Cambridge, he dissuaded him from it, and advised him to send them to the University of North Carolina; because, among other reasons, they would there make acquaintances of many of the future men of the State, and contract friendships that would be of service to them 1n the part they were destined to act in the great drama of life. Excerpt from Life of the Hon. Nathaniel Macon, of North Carolina: In Which There Is Displayed Striking Instances of Virtue, Enterprise, Courage, Generosity and Patriotism An author, who produces a book, be it good or bad, in some measure exhibits his heart to the world, provided this book contains thoughts which, if he has not invented, (and indeed in our days there is little left for invention, ) he has at least found and made his own. He not only reveals the subjects, that have employed his thoughts at certain periods, the doubts that have occurred to perplex him in his journey through life, and the solutions, with which he has removed them; but he reckons upon some minds in unison with his own, be they ever so few, to which these or similar ideas will prove of importance in the labyrinth of life. This is the most estimable merit of authorship, and a man of good heart will feel much less pleasure from what he says, than from what he excites.
