Excerpt from The Island of Cuba That portion of Baron Humboldt's Personal Narrative of his travels with Mons. Bonpland in the equinoctial regions of America, which relates to the Island of Cuba, has been published as a separate work both in the French and Spanish languages; but I believe no complete version has ever been presented in English. The following translation is from an excellent rendering of the original work into Spanish, which modestly gives only the initials of the translator; D. J. B. De V. Y. M. I have been stimulated to undertake this labor by the oft-repeated request that I would state which is the best book on Cuba, and by the fact that a long continued residence in the island, and a study of its condition and resources, have convinced me that Baron Humboldt's work is the best that has been written on the subject. In order to bring the information in this volume as nearly as possible down to the present time, I have added notes, which are placed in brackets in the body of the text, or without signature at the foot of the page, as seemed most conducive to a clear exposition of the present condition of Cuba. The notes of Baron Humboldt have the signature H. Affixed in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Cuba the Pearl of the Antilles Undoubtedly the reader is familiar with the fact that there ewists a surprisingly large number of books on the subject of foreign trade which devote three fourths of their space to use less generalities and the giving of advice on the subject, of such a character as the business man, who uses sound judgment, does not need, and which, for anyone not gifted with common sense, is useless. Time and again the author has seen books on the subject, of 500 to 800 pages, which give no more of basic, fundamental, necessary information than could have been rendered in one third of the same space. Realizing the importance of saving to the business man time and brain power by not wasting his time and energy by a lot of useless data and generalities, the author has prepared the present volume an Cuba its trade and how to cater to and se cure it, with the aim. In view not of how much (useless) infor mation the book furnishes, but rather, how much (useless) in formation is cut out. It is unnecessary to dwell upon the impor tance of Cuban trade, and upon the many factors favoring the conquest of that trade by the United States. These facts are too well known to the progressive business man to be worthy of repetition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Story of Cuba: Her Struggles for Liberty, the Cause, Crisis and Destiny of the Pearl of the Antilles The first words that invite the eye in a book are the last written. When the preface is prepared the work is finished. This volume is up-to-date, but the story of Cuba is not all told. The tragedy goes on. The triumph is to come. The logic of all history contemplates the conclusion we confidently declare. It is, that the end of foreign domination over the discoveries of Columbus and his followers, draws near. Cuba is the splendid stage on which is performed the last act of the drama of Spain in America. It is Spain's war with her children. All nations are spectators - our own with the greater share of interest and sympathy. It is as the first President Harrison wrote of our revolution - "hard, hard indeed, is the struggle for liberty and the contest for independence!" Excerpt from The Pearl of the Antilles: A View of the Past and a Glance at the Future On departing from Cuba (1836) Pearl of the Ocean! Brightest star of all! Enchanting Cuba! Stealthily, in gloom, Night shrouds thy peerless blue with darkest pall, As grief, e'en, doth my pensive soul entomb. About to start! The busy crew, aloft, To tear me from mine own, my native land, Now hoist the sails, and soon the zephyr soft, Wafting them on, blows from thy tropic strand. Farewell, my country bright! Thou Eden dear, Where'er I'm wrecked by tempest wild or gale, Thy gentle name shall soothe my straining ear. Alas! alas! How fills the swelling sail! The anchor's heaved! The rocking ship aside Doth cleave the waves, and on in silence glide. (Rendered from the Spanish sonnet of Gertrudis Gomez de Avellaneda, Cuba's greatest poetess and dramatist.)
