This is a book about a trial in a ver tire manufactured by nue where corporate defendants never win and where jury verdicts have been enormously outsized in the past. A tire manufactured by a defendant company blew out, followed by an accident resulting in a death of a child, brain injury for another, and additional serious injuries - a case considered nearly impossible to defend successfully. The book unveils the anatomy of a high stakes huge litigation with many strange turns along the way. A jury of nearly all African Americans are called upon to decide a case where all the plaintiffs are African American, in a tense and contentious setting, made more complicated by the fact that this all occurred in a small county where the residents were closely knit. The case is rocked with dramatic and unexpected events at the end. Underlying the entire book is a theme the characters struggle with: "What is justice?" How does justice balanced sympathy, emotion, ethnicity, personal and corporate responsibility, basic concepts of right-and-wrong, in the context of evidence laid out in the courtroom, fending off all extraneous influences?
