Excerpt from The Gospel Story in Art For many years before the present volume was actually begun John LaFarge had cherished the wish to write a book on the representation of the Christian story in art, a work for which few men were so well fitted. Born and educated in the older faith of Christendom, he brought to his task not only the reverence of a believer, but also full knowledge of the widely different forms through which the life of Christ has been expressed by artists. He was familiar with the classic writings of the Western and the older Eastern world, and with the legends and traditions told from father to son by the firesides of Europe, or among the islands of the South Sea. Through early study he so trained bis eye and mind that after fifty years he could recall the composition and colouring of a picture. He did not, however, trust to his memory wholly, and in almost every instance the painting or sculpture mentioned in the following pages was described with an engraving or photograph beside him. The originals could not all be reproduced, but those omitted are brought before us by his comprehensive words. Much of this, his last work, was dictated, with frequent intervals due to pain or weariness, and the end came before he could give it the searching and minute revision he would have wished to bestow upon it. Excerpt from The Gospel of Lake: An Exposition This preface is a perfect gem of Greek art; even in the Eng lish Version it loses little, if anything, of its literary charm. As a prologue it is regarded as unsurpassed for brevity, mod esty, and dignity. However, its value lies not in its beauty but in its testimony to the veracity of the writer and to the historic worth and absolute credibility of the gospel story. The fact of inspiration should not blind us to the human means by which the Spirit of God secured accuracy in the communication of truth and in the composition of the Holy Scriptures. Excerpt from The Gospel of John: An Exposition In each section the text of the American Standard Revised version is given first, then some suggestive com ment which should be enlarged and; supplemented, and then follow some questions for personal reflection and for discussion in the class. These questions are not at all meant to be exhaustive. They are merely suggestive. R. The student should master the content of each paragraph of the Gospel so that at the end he can review in his memory the whole story of the Gospel. To this end each lesson should include a quick review of the sub stance of the Gospel from the beginning. 2. Each section should be viewed and grasped in its relation to the whole scheme and argument of the Gospel. The student should refer constantly to the analysis of the Gospel on pages 19 - 22, and to the fuller analysis of each section on the half-title pages preceding it. 3. The lessons of each section should be taken home into our hearts. The two best books on the Gospel from which help has been constantly drawn and freely used are Westcott' 5 Commentary on the Gospel of John and Dods' volumes on John m the Expositor' 5 Bible. Excerpt from A Marvelous Work and a Wonder: The Gospel Restored Prefaces, as a rule, are not read, and we do not intend to bore the reader with any unaccepted matter. Perhaps, however, we may be permitted to observe that to arrive at proper opinions concerning any doctrine or denomination it is but fair that we reserve our verdict until it is heard in its own behalf. Rendering a decision previous to this would result in deprivation to self of the information sought, and do injustice to the subject considered. We are aware that time is valuable and that the sundry essential labors of life, engaging nearly all the attention, make it necessary that Whatever time there be to spare should be devoted to the most important questions.
