Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... possible needs, and that we may safely rest in Him absolutely and for ever. Most Christians have, I suppose, sung more often than they could count, these words in one of our most familiar hymns-- "Thou, O Christ, art all I want, More than all in Thee I find." But I doubt whether all of us could honestly say that the words have expressed any reality in our own experience. Christ has not been all we want. We have wanted a great many things besides Him. We have wanted fervent feelings about Him, or realisations of His presence with us, or an interior revelation of His love; or else we have demanded satisfactory schemes of doctrine, or successful Christian work, or something of one sort or another, beside Himself, that will constitute a personal claim upon Him. Just Christ Himself, Christ alone, without the addition of any of our experiences concerning Him, has not been enough for us, in spite of all our singing; and we do not even see how it is possible that He could be enough. The Psalmist said in those old days, "My soul, wait thou only upon God: for my expectation is from Him." But now the Christian says, "My soul, wait thou upon my sound doctrines, for my expectation is from them;" or, "My soul, wait thou on my good frames and feelings, or upon my righteous works, or upon my fervent prayers, or upon my earnest striving, for my expectation is from these." To wait upon God only, seems one of the most unsafe things they can do, and to have their expectation from Him alone, like building on the sand. They reach out on every side for something to depend on, and, not until everything else fails, will they put their trust in God alone. George Macdonald says: "We look upon God as our last and feeblest resource. We only go to Him when we have...

Generation after generation of readers have kept Hannah Whitall Smith's The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life in continuous print since its first publication in 1875. Many of them, however, never became well acquainted with similar gems of spiritual devotion that are found not only in her other published writings but also in the thousands of pages of unpublished letters and journals in which she recorded her spiritual journey. In 1982, through the kindness of her great-granddaughter, Barbara Strachey Halpern, the editors were given free access to the family's treasure lode of books, memorabilia, and manuscripts at her home in Oxford, England. The result was God Is Enough. The warm response generated by its first printing in 1986 and supported by the thousands who welcomed each additional printing thereafter indicates that the practical spiritual insights of this most widely read spiritual counselor of the nineteenth century still speak to us today.

The Quaker World is an outstanding, comprehensive and lively introduction to this complex Christian denomination. Exploring the global reach of the Quaker community, the book begins with a discussion of the living community, as it is now, in all its diversity and complexity. The book covers well-known areas of Quaker development, such as the formation of Liberal Quakerism in North America, alongside topics which have received much less scholarly attention in the past, such as the history of Quakers in Bolivia and the spread of Quakerism in Western Kenya. It includes over sixty chapters by a distinguished international and interdisciplinary team of contributors and is organised into three clear parts: Global Quakerism Spirituality Embodiment Within these sections, key themes are examined, including global Quaker activity, significant Quaker movements, biographies of key religious figures, important organisations, pacifism, politics, the abolition of slavery, education, industry, human rights, racism, refugees, gender, disability, sexuality and environmentalism. The Quaker World provides an authoritative and accessible source of information on all topics important to Quaker Studies. As such, it is essential reading for students studying world religions, Christianity and comparative religion, and it will also be of interest to those in related fields such as sociology, political science, anthropology and ethics.
