"For T. S. Eliot, Virgil was not merely one of the great masters but 'our classic, the classic of all Europe'. Perhaps no other writer has generated a longer and larger tradition of commentary, translation and imitation." "From Chaucer to W. H. Auden and Robert Lowell, Virgil is a defining presence in English poetry. The Eclogues and Georgics inspired the pastorals of Spenser, Milton and Pope; the Aeneid's pathos, spiritual insights and long-suffering hero - who struggles with doubt, despair and the loss of everything he loves to found the Roman race - made it the model epic. Dryden's complete Virgil in heroic couplets sums up the supersedes his predecessors, yet later translators include Wordsworth, William Morris, Robert Bridges and Cecil Day Lewis. This selection consists largely of extracts from straight translations, along with a number of pieces illustrating Virgil's influence; celebrated episodes like the death of Dido and Aeneas's descent into the underworld appear in several different versions."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This study referred to as a "preface" is given this designation because its basic aim is not to offer an up-to-date overall assessment of Dryden's translation of Virgil's Æneid but, rather, to provide a relevant basis for such an assessment ?thus allowing for a wide range of readership. The relevance of this approach rests on two basic premises: that of R. A. Brower, who maintains "that no translation can be understood or properly evaluated apart from the conditions of expression under which it was made," supported by Dryden's expressed intention "to make Virgil speak such English, as he wou'd himself have spoken, if he had been born in England, and in this present age," together providing a genuinely relevant basis for an understanding of Dryden's translation, "the conditions of expression" here allowing the inclusion of all the possible implications this phrase includes.

This volume gathers together about two thirds of the articles and essays published between 1983 and 2021 by Philip Hardie, whose work on ancient literature has been of seminal importance in the field. The centre of gravity lies in late Republican and Augustan poetry, in particular Lucretius, Virgil, and Ovid, with important contributions on wider Augustan culture; on Neronian and Flavian epic; on the Latin poetry of late antiquity; and on the reception of Latin poetry.
