Prior to that I was a regular visitor to chaplaincy offices here and attended certain stated meetings for a number of years. This is a place of both change and continuity. The casual observer knows that this is a city of broad streets, cool fountains, proud monuments, and impressive buildings. Like all urban centers it also has its less favored neighborhoods, both in center-city and in the surrounding metropolitan area. This is the hub for the lives of at least two million people. From Fort Belvoir to Rockville, from Reston to Fort Meade the suburbs are dominated by Washington commuters. Evidence of the religious influence in the nation's history is noted in five imposing outdoor statues. They depict Martin Luther, John Wesley, Francis Asbury, John Witherspoon, and Cardinal Gibbons.
