Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Communications - Multimedia, Internet, New Technologies, University of Venda, course: Journalism, language: English, abstract: This paper defines new media communications from a wide array perspective, it further outline various roles of the media in today's world, the paper went on to explain how new media technologies are impacting on the roles of the media both positively and negatively. Without the media the world is incomplete, media complete us by serving different roles. The media play different roles within the society. Without the media people would be isolated, not only from the rest of the world but also from their governments, law-makers, and neighbouring countries and cities (Flew, 2002). Media roles within the society are; watchdog, surveillance, edutainment, infotainment, educational, informational, developmental, and entertainment as well as interpreting role. New media technologies are interactive form of communication that uses the internet, including podcast, RRSCeeds, social network, text messaging, blogs, wiki, virtual world and more. New media technologies are democratised to the information and they are helpful in the free flow of information that also make new path for development. New media technologies are mostly digital and they often have characteristics of being manipulated, networkable, dense, compressible and interactive e.g. Internet, websites, computer multimedia, video games, augmented reality, CD-ROOMS and DVDs. Distorting is to change or to twist something so that it become strange. The assertion or the claim that new media technologies are distorting/changing/twisting the roles of the media is to some extent true but not true to a greater extent therefore this essay of mine will do an in-depth analysis on both side of the topic because they are both socially and morally acceptable.

A rare and insightful account by a newsroom insider of how the news skews our perceptions and disorients society 'Fake news' has become a ubiquitous catchphrase and a worldwide obsession. Yet too few of us know that shades of falsehood have always run through the mainstream news media. As news organizations double-down in their efforts to shock and entertain, more people than ever before are tuning-out, disillusioned by negative and manipulative news cycles. In Veils of Distortion, John Zada draws on two decades of journalism experience to explain how and why the news has become broken. By depicting our world through a tiny sample of dramatized events that are often far-removed from our experiences, the news warps our picture of reality. What we see is not the world that actually is, but rather a caricature of it: a simple two-toned realm in which dangers and conflicts lurk around every corner. The societal angst that results can make the news a self-fulfilling prophecy, and can turn our minds into prisons of blinkered thought. Zada walks us through the newsroom to reveal these distorting 'veils.' He offers suggestions on how to mitigate the effects of this coarse infotainment, which, if left unchecked will continue to dumb down and polarize our society, causing it to further unravel.

The concept of nation building is a multi-dimensional process, addressing various components simultaneously. It takes into account the various historical and geographical perspectives of the country in question, noting the peculiarities and diversity of its cultural ethos, including its social, economic and political structures. This volume addresses these inter-linked aspects, and the innovative development of these structures and institutions. However, such changes and development must be directed to create a more culturally homogenous and productive society, so that basic human needs like food, shelter, healthcare and education are fulfilled at the optimum level. All-round development and growth for the nation can be achieved only with a robust economy and political stability. As such, the process of nation building and development is a multifaceted phenomenon. In the context of India, this process is associated with the central values embodied in the preamble of the country’s constitution, which advocates for the establishment of secular, socialist and democratic society based on well-defined fundamental rights. This anthology reflects these academic spirits and vistas.

New media is becoming integral to our lives. But for how long can we refer to emerging media as new in this fast-moving digital age? What makes it 'new'? And what problems do interactive media create for us, as cultural beings? This book investigates the culture and context of new media. Exploring and critiquing debates drawn from media and cultural theory, Fuery clearly explores and defines the concepts of new media and interactivity. With a clear and structured approach, the book questions existing ideas about digital culture and explains the problems that emerging technologies can present to our culture, from issues of surveillance and power to the digitalisation of the body. In particular, the book includes: - A variety of perspectives and approaches to the idea of the 'new'. - Consideration and evaluation of work from key media theorists, from Foucault to Bourdieu. - Relevant and innovative examples that bring the complexities of new media to life. - A glossary for quick reference and explanation of complex concepts. New Media: Culture and Image interrogates the key concepts, models and approaches surrounding the formation and evolution of new media. It will encourage all students of Cultural Studies and Media Studies to question and reconsider their ideas about media and cultural theory.
