Excerpt from The Discovery of God Generally speaking, this progress is made through some individual pioneer Of truth who gathers into himself the best in what previous generations have handed down to him, and goes on to richer understandings. These adventures occur all through the Bible's reflection Of the soul of man, and we shall pause at but a few of them. It shall be at such times as when to some sensitive spirit new qualities in God became evi dent, as radium to Madame Curie, or to New ton the law Of gravitation. The experiences Of men like Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, St. Paul, are SO akin to discovery that there is no forcing Of language in the use Of the term. Developing their own insight into the Divine, they Opened up the way by which others could follow their example. Excerpt from The Creation and the Scripture: The Revelation of God This volume was found, in manuscript, among the unpublished writings of G. E. Monell, M.D., of Omaha, who died suddenly September 29, 1881. For many years, in accordance with his early education, he gave an unquestioned adherence to the verbal inspiration of the Old and New Testament and to the doctrines of the orthodox churches, considering these essential to a belief in Christianity. Under the enlightened influence of modern discussion the foundations of his faith were shaken, and he examined the Scriptures diligently to ascertain what truth was. Gradually curtailing his medical practice, he extended his research into the fields of history, science and literature, and we here have the result, in part, of his labors. Instead of drifting into Atheism or Agnosticism, he became, with the exercise of the largest liberty, the firmest of believers in the sufficiency of Christ's life and precepts to give guidance and consolation in this life, and an unshaken hope in the future. This volume is published as a tribute to the memory of its author, with the hope that it may aid others in solving some of the problems of our existence.
