Livvy Flynn is a big deal - she's a New York Times-bestselling author whose YA fiction has sold all over the world. She's rich, she's famous, she's gorgeous, and she's full of herself. When she's invited to an A-list writer's conference, she decides to accept so she can have some time to herself. She's on a tight deadline for her next book, and she has no intention of socializing with the other industry people at the conference. And then she hits the detour. Before she knows it, her brand new car is wrecked, she's hurt, and she's tied to a bed in a nondescript shack in the middle of nowhere. A woman and her apparently manic daughter have kidnapped her. And they have no intention of letting her go.

Ernst Vogler is twenty-six years old in 1938 when he is sent to Rome by his employer—the Third Reich's Sonderprojekte, which is collecting the great art of Europe and bringing it to Germany for the Führer. Vogler is to collect a famous Classical Roman marble statue, The Discus Thrower, and get it to the German border, where it will be turned over to Gestapo custody. It is a simple, three-day job. Things start to go wrong almost immediately. The Italian twin brothers who have been hired to escort Vogler to the border seem to have priorities besides the task at hand—wild romances, perhaps even criminal jobs on the side—and Vogler quickly loses control of the assignment. The twins set off on a dangerous detour and Vogler realizes he will be lucky to escape this venture with his life, let alone his job. With nothing left to lose, the young German gives himself up to the Italian adventure, to the surprising love and inevitable losses along the way. The Detour is a bittersweet novel about artistic obsession, misplaced idealism, detours, and second chances, set along the beautiful back-roads of northern Italy on the eve of war.

The Detour is a fascinating journey through eight worlds in seven chapters. Not strictly an autobiography, it provides glimpses of a Lancashire childhood in pre-war and wartime Leyland and the Roman Catholicism of that time and place. There follows the wider world of grammar school and the author's first contact with the Jesuits; and then that of the novitiate, which he aptly calls 'Out of this World', so surreal and strange does it now appear. He then contrasts the liberating world of Oxford, with its tutors and general openness, with the rigid spiritual, philosophical and theological worlds that belonged to what he calls 'Jesuitism'. After protracted studies he held responsible posts at Heythrop College for over ten years, where he played a major role in its move to become part of the University of London. After a further decade as Head of Theology and Religious Studies at the Roehampton Institute, Robert Butterworth is now enjoying married life in domestic retirement, cooking, studying Greek classical writers and exploring his new world of personal reflection, which has led him to propose some practical and challenging principles for the reinterpretation and revision of Roman Catholic tradition. The whole story makes for a riveting read, with a rare combination of elegance, depth and contemporary relevance.
