Land consolidation can be an effective instrument to improve and reform land tenure structure in support of integrated rural development by addressing problems of land fragmentation. This guide has been prepared to support land administrators in land agencies responsible for the technical design and implementation of land consolidation pilot projects in transition countries. Issues considered include: advice on starting a land consolidation pilot project; why land consolidation should be considered within agricultural and rural development policies and programmes; key elements of land consolidation and how it can be introduced in different situations; and rules needed to govern responsibilities and procedures during the pilot project.

Bringing together case studies from Europe, Africa and North and South America, this book makes a fresh assessment of the role of the individual and the state in land development. It discusses a range of issues related to land reform, land development and land management, providing a unique reflection of the current state of research. Particular emphasis is laid on the implementation of sustainable processes of land development as an integrated principle of land management. The book examines the rights of the land users and addresses a number of issues relating to sustainability and land development, ranging from emerging land markets and environmental issues, through to natural resource development. The case studies provide practical examples of the application of land reform and land development to land management.

This book gathers papers that are centered on the theory and practice of a wide variety of advanced technologies. They cover the latest developments in computing, networking, information technology, robotics, complex systems, communications, energy, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, geodesy, and other subjects. These papers were selected for presentation at the 12th annual conference Days of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), which was scheduled to be held in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, in light of the high quality of the submissions, BHAAAS’ technical and natural sciences division decided to create this special book despite the postponement. Governments have conferred ownership titles to many citizens throughout the world in an effort to turn things into property. Almost all elements of nature have become the target of property laws, from the classic preoccupation with land to more ephemeral material, such as air and genetic resources. When Things Become Property interrogates the mixed outcomes of conferring ownership by examining postsocialist land and forest reforms in Albania, Romania and Vietnam, and finds that property reforms are no longer, if they ever were, miracle tools available to governments for refashioning economies, politics or environments.

This edited collection disrupts dominant narratives about space, states, and borders, bringing comparative ethnographic and geographic scholarship in conversation with one another to illuminate the varied ways in which space becomes socialized via political, economic, and cognitive appropriation. Societies must, first and foremost, do more than wrangle over ownership and land rights — they must dwell in space. Yet, historically the interactions between the state’s territorial imperative with previous forms of landscape management have unfolded in a variety of ways, including top-down imposition, resistance, and negotiation between local and external actors. These interactions have resulted in hybrid forms of territoriality, and are often fraught with fundamentally different perceptions of landscape. This book foregrounds these experiences and draws attention to situations in which different social constructions of space and territory coincide, collide, or overlap. Each ethnographic case in this volume presents forms of territoriality that are contingent upon contested histories, politics, landscape, the presence or absence of local heterogeneity and the involvement of multiple external actors with differing motivations — ultimately all resulting in the potential for conflict or collaboration and divergent implications for conceptions of community, autochthony and identity.

This book is a collection of Special Issue articles that aim to discern a people-centered pathway to solving land-based challenges in the context of land administration. It consists of 13 positively evaluated research articles. Each of the articles contributes to the large mosaic of knowledge on land methods (or tools) that are relevant to resolving land challenges that women and youths face. The book highlights 13 critical lessons on “Land, Women, Youths, and Land Tools or Methods.”
