Excerpt from The Dental Columbian, 1938 The nature of this graduate training for specialization is still to be determined, but one thing seems certain and that is that it should be on a university basis and qualitatively equivalent to graduate training in other branches of the university. Since the least graduate work to carry uni versity recognition is that for the master's degree, it might be well to start with that in the field of dentistry. It is conceivable that in any of the special clinical phases of dentistry two academic years of work might be so planned as to satisfy the graduate school requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Dental Surgery or Orthodontics or some other special field of dental practice. Excerpt from Dental Columbian, 1940 The time of the appearance of the volume contain ing this message will approach the twenty-second anniversary of my own graduation. This in itself is hardly unique or worthy of second thought. There is. However. A connection. I remember that as the time neared for me to leave the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, as an undergraduate. L expressed regret and voiced a small quiet hope without the most remote thought of its fulfill ment. This silently communed wish was: If it were possible. I should like to spend all my life on or near a uhiversity campus. Partaking in whatever manner I could afford of the liberties and cultural richness it had taught me to associate with it. The wish was and remained sincere. No matter how it may have been fostered by an approaching nostalgia. Common to all students once their undergraduate worries have been dispelled. Excerpt from The Dental Columbian, 1937 The unforgettable shock we received that December afternoon when two of the men closest to us and our work, were so cruelly and suddenly snatched away. The dumb agony that tore our souls and the vow in each heart that the ideals of Dr. Rowe and Dr. Wiberg must not die. Excerpt from The Dental Columbian, 1934: The Annual Publication of the Student Body During the current bewildering upheaval of our economic system, we have been engrossed in our studies. We are now thrust upon a world unsteady, dubious, and even reluctant to accept us. The thought of engaging faithfully in the practice of dentistry in an economic chaos presents itself as a horrible abyss; yet so true and vigorous has been our training that we face the prospect, head erect, unwavering; this is just another Obstacle to overcome. It is fitting, therefore, that before plunging into these grim realities awaiting us, we pause and enjoy a brief interlude, a moment in which to reflect, to smile, even to laugh.
