Excerpt from The Colonnade, Vol. 1: April, 1939 Although there are more than twice as many teaching positions in the elementary grades as in the high schools in Virginia, only of the total enrollment of the student body at Farmville for the fall and winter quarters of 1938-39 are matriculated in curricula which prepare for teaching in the elementary grades. Of the total enroll ment of 847 students for these two quarters, are matriculated in curricula leading to teaching in high schools, are matriculated in curricula leading to teach ing. In the elementary grades, the other being matriculated in pie-nursing courses, or in commercial courses, or as special students. With 4470 of the present Sophomore class matriculated in curricula preparing for teaching in the elementary grades, there is an increase over the junior and senior classes, the percentages for which are and respectively. But the freshman class shows a decided drop with only of the class enrolled in curricula preparing for work in the grades.
