A cleft adventure from birth to nine written by a boy born with cleft. Hi, My name is Quin, my dad calls me Smile^z. Even though we look different, we should all be treated the same. I have two brothers "Zman", he's two years older than me and "A", he's my identical twin without cleft. I was born with a severe unilateral cleft lip and palate. Sometimes it is hard to make friends because people think I am ugly, but I think I am cool just because of the way I look. My dad taught me to face my differences and say, "I was born with my nose just like you were born with yours." I hope you enjoy my book. Your Champ, Smile^z

At first sight it may appear strange that a volume of Progress in Pediatric Surgery should be devoted to the history of our specialty. One assumes that progress is concerned primarily with recent developments whilst history deals with matters of the past. However, in the past there has also been considerable progress in the development of our understand ing of paediatric surgical problems, otherwise we would not have pro gressed to our present achievements. The editors, therefore, do not apologize for compiling this volume but, on the contrary, feel that the publication of this volume is most timely. Modern paediatric surgery has now been practised for three genera tions. The handful of pioneers who were the founders of our specialty worked mainly before the last world war. A few dozen of the inter mediary generation started work immediately after the war, while the new generation who are now dominating our specialty must be counted in thousands. Two factors have radically altered paediatric surgery as practised by the intermediary and the present generation of surgeons.

Dr. Bennun and his team detail the diagnostic techniques to determine the best treatment protocols for optimal results and decreased chance of retreatment. The first part explains the principles of cleft and palate treatment, including the role of tissue engineering in craniofacial surgery. Part 2 details the aspects of primary surgical reconstruction, Part 3 discusses orthodontic treatments of cleft lip and palate, including a chapter on adult treatment, and Part 4 covers how to improve results in interdisciplinary treatment. Case presentations include results of treatment after 20-year follow up visits. Ideal for oral and maxillofacial surgeons, pediatric plastic surgeons, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, and residents in these specialties.
