Every language includes layers of lexical and grammatical elements that entered it at different times in the more or less distant past. Hence, for periods preceding our earliest historical documentation, linguistic stratigraphy — the systematic study of such layers — may yield information about the prehistory of a given tradition of speaking in a variety of ways. For instance, irregular phonological reflexes may be evidence of the convergence of diverse dialects in the formation of a language, and layers of material from different source languages may form a record of changing cultural contacts in the past. In this volume are discussed past problems and current advances in the stratigraphy of Indo-European, African, Southeast Asian, Australian, Oceanic, Japanese, and Meso-American languages.

This posthumously published work by Dr Ken Gardiner who taught ancient and early medieval Chinese history at the Australian National University for nearly three decades, is a fascinating account of relations between Qin and Han dynasties China and various states in the Eurasian Steppe, forged through war and diplomacy. The author's access to a broad range of primary and secondary sources in Classical and modern languages, including Latin, Classical Chinese and Japanese and cross-disciplinary approach, combing history, archaeology, philosophy, mythology, art, literature and philology, has enabled him to examine the complex integratory processes, unleashed by early East-West contacts, with extraordinary sophistication. Some of the topics that this book analyses and addresses are: image of central Asian peoples in Chinese myths and legends; role of Zhang Qian, envoy of Emperor Wu of Han (r. 141-87 BCE) to Central Asian states, in expanding the frontier of Chinese knowledge about the Western region; penetration of Han China into the oasis kingdoms of the Tarim basin, and further west to Parthia and Mesopotamia, in search of the celebrated "blood-sweating horses," grapes and even slaves; and Han China's domination of central Asia through its frontier policy of 'divide et impera,' disintegration of Xiongnu Confederation and military campaign against Shanyu Zhizhi in 36 BCE.

Modelled on A.L. Bashamís monumental work The Wonder That Was India, this account of the Origins and Development of Classical Hinduism represents a lifetime of reflection on the subject and offers an intriguing introduction to one of the richest of all Asian traditions. The late A. L. Basham was one of the world s foremost authorities on ancient Indian culture and religion. Modelled on his monumental work ‘The Wonder That Was India’, this account of the origins and development of classical Hinduism represents a lifetime of reflection on the subject and offers an intriguing introduction to one of the richest of all Asian traditions. Synthesizing Basham s great knowledge of the art, architecture, literature, and religion of South Asia, this concise history traces the spiritual life of Indian from the time of the Indus Culture through the crystallization of classical Hinduism in the first centuries of the common era and includes a final chapter by the editor, Kenneth G. Zysk, on Hinduism after the classical period. Uniquely comprehensive, it chronicles as well the rise of other mystical and ascetic traditions, such as Buddhism and Jainism, and follows Hinduism s later incarnations in the West. With its vivid presentation of Hinduism s sources and its clearly written explanations and analyses of the major Hindu texts-among them the Rg-veda, the Brahmanas, Upanisads, and the Mahabharata and Ramayana-The Origins of Classical Hinduism clarifies much of Hinduism s enduring mystique. Offering an especially helpful bibliography, numerous illustrations of Hindu art never before published, and a lucid, accessible style, this book is must reading for anyone who has ever been intrigued by this fascinating religion.
