This book is an English translation of the Draft Chinese Civil Code prepared by the Legislative Group of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences headed by Prof. Liang Huixing, which is officially mandated by the Legislative Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China.

Richard A. This book is characterized by the addition of article-by-article purpose on the basis of legal articles, systematically indicating the main content of each article, so that readers can easily and clearly understand the content of the articles.

What changes occurred and what remained the same in Chinese civil justice from the Qing to the Republic? Drawing on archival records of actual cases, this study provides a new understanding of late imperial and Republican Chinese law. It also casts a new light on Chinese law by emphasizing rural areas and by comparing the old and the new.
