In 2004 the States of Jersey established the Jersey Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (JBMS) as part of its commitment to environmental monitoring. Members of the public were recruited to count butterflies at 38 locations across the island. During the first ten years of the JBMS these volunteers walked over 3,600 miles and counted exactly 122,279 butterflies. This book unveils the results of the JBMS's first ten years of monitoring. The butterfly records are analysed and combined with habitat data, historical records and other information to offer an insight into the diversity, abundance and status of all Jersey's butterfly species. As might be expected, the picture is mixed with some species doing better than others. The health of Jersey's butterflies is discussed and suggestions are made as to how species' populations and diversity can be encouraged to expand cross the island. This book also summarises historical records and acts as a guide to all of Jersey's known butterfly species from the past and present. Features of this report include: A guide to all of Jersey's current and historical butterfly species. A summary of ten years of intensive butterfly counting. Clear colour photographs of all the species featured. Information on the health of Jersey's butterfly populations. Advice on the conservation and promotion of butterflies.

Butterfly watching has begun to gain the popularity that bird watching has enjoyed for half a century. Much as birds served as a flagship of the conservation movement in this country, butterflies are coming to be seen as the rallying point for the protection of invertebrate species--now regarded as increasingly important for the well-being of all members of the ecosystem. Butterflies of New Jersey discusses the behavior, status, distribution, taxonomy, ecology, and conservation of butterflies in New Jersey. It is an innovative companion and complement to any butterfly identification guide of the Northeast. It pays particular attention to the place of butterflies in the ecosystem of New Jersey and neighboring regions and their relationships to other butterflies around the world. Its detailed species accounts of 140-plus kinds of butterflies found in the state and neighboring regions (out of 700 North American species) alert butterfly watchers to changes in populations over time. Where other butterfly guides typically include a section on collecting butterflies, this one includes a detailed chapter on protecting them by creating butterfly gardens and preventing habitat destruction. Butterflies of New Jersey is indispensable for everyone interested in the butterflies and natural history of the Garden State and its neighbor.

The New Jersey Butterflies, officially the Third New Jersey Cavalry, was formed for the last year of the Civil War. They were also known as the First American Hussars; their creation by an alcoholic ex-officer of the Union Army was supposed to entice men to join a galloping, dashing, romantic cavalry unit. Clothed in orange gilt trimmed hats and capes, they were supposed to charge armed only with a saber, in most traditional European Cavalry fashion, into battle and subdue an enemy armed with rifles. This book is not about battlefield configurations, but rather about the men themselves. Individual stories from original accounts will examine how this glorious, historically victorious, difficult and often tragic year affected their return to the daily world of doctors, teachers, lawyers, clerks and workmen.
