"Comfort, comfort My people. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and announce to her that her time of servitude is over, her iniquity has been pardoned, and she has received from the Lords hand double for all her sins." Isaiah 40: 2 There is need always for tender words. Always there is sorrow. Everywhere hearts are breaking. There is no one who is not made happier by gentle speech. Yet there is in the world, a dearth of tender words. Some people scarcely ever speak them. Their tones are harsh. There seems no kindness in their hearts. They are gruff, severe, faultfinding. Even in the presence of suffering and sorrow, they evince no tenderness. "Speak tenderly" is a divine exhortation. That is the way God wants us to speak to each other. That is the way God himself ever speaks to his children. The Bible is full of tender words. We would say that in view of the wickedness of men, their ingratitude, the base return they make for God's goodness, the way they stain the earth with sinGod would be angry with them every day. But instead of anger, only love is shown. He is ever speaking in words of loving kindness. He makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends the rain on the just and the unjust. Every message he sends is love. All his thoughts toward his children are peace. The most wonderful expression of his heart toward the world, was in the giving of Christ. He was the Word, the revealer of the heart of God. He never spoke so tenderly to women when he sent his Son. Who can measure the comfort that was given to the world in Jesus Christ? This book will bring words of comfort and peace to the hearts of those who seek rest for their hearts in a reading inspired by the Word of God

We live in an increasingly "virtual" world in which it can be tempting to skip making that true, human connection with someone in pain. Even though our thoughts might be with them, we lack the confidence to reach out, worrying that we will say or do the "wrong" thing. In this practical, step-by-step guide to what she calls "the art of comforting," Val Walker draws on numerous interviews with "Master Comforters" to guide readers in gently and gracefully breaking through the walls that those who are suffering often erect around themselves. Interviewees include inspiring individuals such as Alicia Rasin, who, as a victim's advocate for the city of Richmond, Virginia, has devoted her life to comforting grieving families devastated by homicide, gang violence, and other traumatic experiences; or Patricia Ellen, who, as a grief counselor and outreach director at the Center for Grieving Children in Portland, Maine, appears on site to support and comfort children, staff, and parents when a school is facing a death, violence, or other crises. All of us will, at one time or the other, be called upon to offer warmth and support to another human being who is suffering-this book will show you how to answer the call with an open heart.

What was the message in Isaiah 40-55? Who was the intended audience? Chapters 40-55 of the book of Isaiah, also known as Second Isaiah or Deutero-Isaiah, have been examined and discussed by many biblical scholars. In this new work, Debra Moody Bass synthesizes the work of noted authorities on Deutero-Isaiah, recent scholarly analysis, and archaeological work from prominent archaeologists such as E. Stern to identify the audience and message in this critical passage. God Comforts Israel identifies the message God gave to the people of Israel in the 6th century B.C.E. as a message of comfort. This comfort was all encompassing and was meant to encourage the exiles to return to Jerusalem and become the "Servant of Yahweh" and proclaim to "the ends of the earth" the salvation of God.
