Probably there are not, on an average, more than 30 to 40 acres of plowed land on each ranch, the rest of the Open area being used for hay or pasture. There are altogether 450 to 460 ranches in the tim bered portion of the Black Hills. In the foothills, below the timber line, there are a great number of ranches scattered along the streams and on rich flats.
