The Birth of a LegacyShe was born, the youngest of thirteen children to meager yet stable parents in the rural town of Bismark, Minnesota. In 1912 the town boasted a population of 709 before someone was hired to change it after Bella was two weeks old. Most of the 709 people were related to her somehow, so, as she grew up, she was surrounded by family everyday of her childhood. The holidays were always crowded with many visitors, visits and lots and lots of cooking. From the time Bella could remember, she was constantly surrounded by family; a warm and loving family. Her mother, of Hungarian descent, was born to Hungarian Immigrants, who settled in Bismark with nothing but the clothes on their backs, tattered as they were, and a determination to survive. They not only survived, they thrived as they grew their farm to one of the largest producers of corn in the history of farming. Their children had all gotten married and now their baby just had her last child. Grandma couldn't believe they now had thirteen grandchildren from one of their children! That made a total of twenty-seven grandchildren in all! They felt blessed by God in many areas of their lives.

In Uplift Cinema, Allyson Nadia Field recovers the significant yet forgotten legacy of African American filmmaking in the 1910s. Like the racial uplift project, this cinema emphasized economic self-sufficiency, education, and respectability as the keys to African American progress. Field discusses films made at the Tuskegee and Hampton Institutes to promote education, as well as the controversial The New Era, which was an antiracist response to D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation. She also shows how Black filmmakers in New York and Chicago engaged with uplift through the promotion of Black modernity. Uplift cinema developed not just as a response to onscreen racism, but constituted an original engagement with the new medium that has had a deep and lasting significance for African American cinema. Although none of these films survived, Field's examination of archival film ephemera presents a method for studying lost films that opens up new frontiers for exploring early film culture.
