Excerpt from The Archon, Vol. 28: December 17, 1940 The Toastmaster of the Dinner was Mr. Herbert A. Pickett, father of the new foot ball captain. Mr. Pickett, Headmaster Of Cooperstown Academy in Cooperstown New York, was himself an outstanding athlete, starring as a track man at both Andover and Yale. The feature speaker of the evening was Mr. William J. Bingham, Director of Athletics at Harvard College. Mr. Bingham is one of the best-known of the college at'hletic heads in the country. Through his work the famed intramural system at Harvard was instituted and he was responsible for bringing Dick Harlow to Cambridge as football coach. Mr. Bingham is further noted for his forthright stand against subsidization of college athletes. He has also for many years been a 'member of the Football Rules Committee. Mr. Eugene S. Wilson, Alumni Secretary at Amherst, also spoke on the program. Mr. Wilson while at Amherst starred in football and baseball, being captain of the latter sport.
