This book is about Tanzania and its development prospects. Within ten short chapters, each with well-chosen sub-titles, the text covers a wide range of subjects. Each subject highlights a specific theme or themes that are of topical interest in the current development debate. Under each theme the author, without trying to delve deeply into the subject, raises a number of pertinent questions, enough to whet the readers appetite and to cause him to think twice about the contemporary debate. From the outset, the author dismisses offhand the idea that Tanzania is intrinsically poor: he emphasizes that Tanzania is richly endowed with natural resources of all kinds, and lays the blame for the countrys underdevelopment squarely on the failure of its people to mobilize their resources, which he attributes largely to lack of education, poor leadership, and widespread corruption. Contrary to the common approaches, Dreams for my Country calls Mozambicans and Africans to take full responsibility for our failures and sees developing confidence in ourselves, a mindset shift and coming about with a clear and definite long-term agenda as a solution that will bring change and prosperity. Pedro Vilanculo was born and raised in the small Mozambican town of Vilankulo, a territory named after his ancestors. Despite his unfavorable origins he grew up believing in a future that could be better- and today he expands his hope for a Mozambique and Africa that will prosper and deliver for the people. He had the privilege of studying in different countries and his educational background includes in the areas of law and management. This publication contains the policy and technical papers and the presentations made concerning valuable country experiences as well as the ministerial policy statements delivered at the special plenary session on the occasion of the WIPO High-Level Forum for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), held in Geneva on July 23 and 24, 2009. Presentations of national experiences in the successful use of intellectual property for economic growth and development in LDCs, included that of Ethiopia, in using trademarks to promote its major export commodity, coffee; of Malaysia, in using patent information for national technological capacity-building; and of South Africa, in using traditional knowledge for the generation of employment and wealth creation.
