The papers cover a wide range of topics in the analysis of biological systems, networks and data such as model checking, stochastic analysis, hybrid systems, circadian clock, time series data, logic programming, and constraints solving ranging from intercellular to multiscale.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Computational Methods in Systems Biology, CMSB 2008, held in Rostock, Germany, in September 2008. The 21 revised full papers presented together with the summaries of 5 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from more than 60 submissions. The papers cover theoretical or applied contributions that are motivated by a biological question focusing on modeling approaches, including process algebra, simulation approaches, analysis methods, in particular model checking and flux analysis, and case studies.

This issue on Computational Models for Cell Processes is based on a workshop that took place in Turku, Finland, May 2008. The papers span a mix of approaches to systems biology, ranging from quantitative techniques to computing paradigms inspired by biology.

Biological and biomedical research are increasingly driven by experimental techniques that challenge our ability to analyse, process and extract meaningful knowledge from the underlying data. The impressive capabilities of next-generation sequencing technologies, together with novel and constantly evolving, distinct types of omics data technologies, have created an increasingly complex set of challenges for the growing fields of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. The analysis of the datasets produced and their integration call for new algorithms and approaches from fields such as Databases, Statistics, Data Mining, Machine Learning, Optimization, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Clearly, Biology is more and more a science of information and requires tools from the computational sciences. In the last few years, we have seen the rise of a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists with a strong background in the biological and computational sciences. In this context, the interaction of researchers from different scientific fields is, more than ever, of foremost importance in boosting the research efforts in the field and contributing to the education of a new generation of Bioinformatics scientists. The PACBB’17 conference was intended to contribute to this effort and promote this fruitful interaction, with a technical program that included 39 papers spanning many different sub-fields in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Further, the conference promoted the interaction of scientists from diverse research groups and with a distinct background (computer scientists, mathematicians, biologists).

Topics of interest include formalisms for modeling biological processes; models and their biological applications; frameworks for model verification, validation, analysis, and simulation of biological systems; high-performance computational systems biology and parallel implementations; model inference from experimental data; model integration from biological databases; multi-scale modeling and analysis methods; computational approaches for synthetic biology; and case studies in systems and synthetic biology. * The conference was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This book constitutes the thoroughly referred post-workshop proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Hybrid Systems biology, HSB 2015, held as part of the Madrid Meet 2015 event, in Madrid, Spain in September 2015. The volume presents 13 full papers together with 2 abstracts of invited sessions from 18 submissions. The scope of the HSB workshop is the general area of dynamical models in Biology with an emphasis on hybrid approaches — by no means restricted to a narrow class of mathematical models — and taking advantage of techniques developed separately in different areas.
