This book offers foreign readers an overview and understanding of the most important aspects of the law and legal system in Sweden, from the legal institutions to more specific topics such as contract law, tort law and family law. These presentations are not exhaustive but rather meant to give the reader a sufficient enough understanding to be somewhat orientated in the Swedish legal system. The book is written for non-Swedish lawyers faced with specific legal issues involving Swedish law. It is also addressed to foreign law students in need of an overview of the Swedish legal system in order to help them in their further studies at Swedish universities. This third edition takes up many of the legislative changes that have recently been adopted due to the requirements of EU membership and law. Most recent and significant include the amendments to the Tort Act to allow for damages of violations of the European Convention, the significant amendments to the constitutional Freedom of the Press Act, as well as the adoption of the 2017 Local Government Act and Administrative Procedures Act.

In Conquest and the Law in Swedish Livonia (ca. 1630-1710), Heikki Pihlajamäki offers an exciting account of the law in seventeenth-century Livonia, conquered by Sweden. The volume demonstrates how the differences in legal cultures affected the Livonian judiciary and legal procedure in the region.

In Learning Law and Travelling Europe, Marianne Vasara-Aaltonen offers an exciting account of the study journeys of Swedish lawyers in the early modern period. Based on archival sources and biographical information, the study delves into the backgrounds of the law students, their travels through Europe, and their future careers. In seventeenth-century Sweden, the state-building process was at its height, and trained officials were desperately needed for the administration and judiciary. The book shows convincingly that the studies abroad of future lawyers were intimately linked to this process, whereas in the eighteenth century, study journeys became less important. By examining the development of the Swedish early modern legal profession, the book also represents an important contribution to comparative legal history.

In order to avoid possible disappointment, it would seem important to make clear from the outset what kind of questions the authors propose to answer and what groups of readers they are addressing. The easiest way to do this is to set out what we are not purporting to do. Thus, the book is not intended to serve as a primer for students who possess no knowledge of "the law", i. e. of the concepts, ideas and solutions of at least one legal system. Nor is it the purpose of the authors to give practitioners the kind of precise, techni cal answers to isolated questions that they need when advising their clients on the proper course of action in business, or litigation, con ducted within the framework of the legal system described.
