Following the unprecedented achievements of his Fourth World titles, Jack Kirby returned to the DC Universe in 1984 for two special miniseries celebrating Kenner’s new DC-themed Super Powers toy line. Together with such creative collaborators as Joey Cavalieri, Adrian Gonzales and Paul Kupperberg, Kirby revisited all of DC’s greatest heroes and villains in the pages of SUPER POWERS, and launched them through time and space into the kind of cosmic adventure that only the King of Comics could deliver! Revisit this bygone era—and thrill to the imaginative power of one of the medium’s greatest masters—in SUPER POWERS BY JACK KIRBY, collecting both of the dimension-spanning sagas that capped off the King’s triumphant tenure at DC. Do great leaders make history? Or are they compelled to act by historical circumstance? This debate has remained unresolved since Thomas Carlyle and Karl Marx framed it in the mid-nineteenth century, yet implicit answers inform our policies and our views of history. In this book, Professor Bear F. Braumoeller argues persuasively that both perspectives are correct: leaders shape the main material and ideological forces of history that subsequently constrain and compel them. His studies of the Congress of Vienna, the interwar period, and the end of the Cold War illustrate this dynamic, and the data he marshals provide systematic evidence that leaders both shape and are constrained by the structure of the international system.
