Progress in Liver Diseases, Volume II presents the progress made in the understanding of bilirubin metabolism and secretion. Ultrastructural Pathology of the Cell and Matrix: Third Edition Volume I present a comprehensive examination of the intracellular lesion. It discusses the analysis of pathological tissues using electron microscope. It addresses the experimental procedures made on the cellular level. Some of the topics covered in the book are the physiological analysis of the nucleus; nuclear matrix, interchromatin, and perichromatin granules; structure and function of centrioles; characteristics of mitochondria; Golgi complex in cell differentiation and neoplasia; and degranulation of rough endoplasmic reticulum. Introduction to Electron Microscopy, Second Edition provides an introduction to the foundations of electron microscopy; an outline of some practical aspects of instrument operation; and discussion of the rationale of the methodology of biological specimen preparation. The book seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical and operational aspects of the electron microscope. This edition consists of two parts. Part One deals with the history, basic theory, and operation of the electron microscope. Part Two discusses steps used in material preparation for electron microscope investigation such as fixation, embedding, and staining techniques. Biomedical researchers, molecular biologists, toxicologists, forensic investigators, and medical students will find this book a very useful reference.

A volume on the biliary system appeared in 1965, based on a symposium of the NATO Advanced Institute held in September, 1963, in Newcastle upon Tyne in England. It soon became an authorita tive text on the problems of the biliary tract and, for instance, the discussion on the biliary secretion of organic anions, organic cations and inorganic ions were classic references. The worn pages of the volume in many libraries, including my own, bespeak its usefulness over ten long years. The initiative and energy of the Director of the first Institute have to be admired, even more so since he was able to assemble a Second Institute in Aalborg, Denmark, in 1975. His wisdom is reflected in the selection of the subjects discussed. The comparison between the two volumes tells something about the advancement in the time interval in knowledge about liver and biliary tract diseases, about the turnover of researchers interested in the liver and its diseases, and also about the present philosophy in biologic science. For this com parison, this volume is particularly suited because, in contrast to many other recent conferences, the more leisurely pace of the NATO Institutes permits more comprehensive but still scholarly reviews of the problems. The foreword of the first volume, written by my colleague, the late Harry Sobotka, expresses his, now dated, astonishment about the progress of knowledge of biology of the bile, so much less accessible to study than urine.

The study of cell membranes began to attract increasing interest before the turn of the present century with the observations of 0 verton. Since that time many investigators have become interested in the broad problem of structure and function of the membrane and today we find ourselVes at a stage in which several branches of research, particularly physical chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, physiology and pharmacology have come together, leading to the possibility of obtaining a better perspective of the overall problems. The purpose of this Symposium was to assemble in an orderly sequence representations of the knowledge of membranes achieved to date in the areas of the various disciplines. It was thought that to bring together many points of view on a problem should allow the conferees to see better what had been accomplished, what has been overlooked and what needs further development. It is to be hoped that efforts of this type have and will fulfill the desired purpose. This volume contains the majority of the papers contributed by the participants in the Symposium. In addition, it seemed logical to place at the beginning of each chapter at least one general survey of the subject which would help those who were less acquainted with the problem to derive the most benefit from their reading.
