Transnational Corporations, Technology Transfer and Development: A Bibliographic Sourcebook compiles references one can use in studying transnational corporations and related topics. The compilation divides various source materials into eight major themes. The sourcebook presents publications on the development of science and technology; the International Technology Gap and the NIEO; and transnational corporations and technology. The other groups of publications compiled mainly focus on the anatomy of corporate technology transfer; technology transfer and host countries; and sectoral analysis, wherein several case studies are included. The last two sets of reference materials are concerned with technology transfer and the home country and its regulation. Technology is not an end in itself, but a way of satisfying human wants. It shows us how to solve the age-old economic problem of surviving and pros pering in a hard world. But to optimize the benefits of technological advance requires an understanding of how it happens. The purpose of this book is to provide some of that understanding. The subject is so enormous and so intertwined with every human activity that a small selection of it, and that from a special viewpoint, is inevitable. The selection of subject matter has been, of course, conditioned by what interests me and is somewhat heterogeneous. However, it is connected by two major themes. The first is that it emphasizes the dynamic nature of technology, in the sense that it must be approached as a process evolving in time that can often be described in quantitative terms. The second is that I have chosen topics that I believe are essential for a strategic sense of how to plan for, execute, and respond to technological change. These two themes complement each other because the strategic sense requires an appreciation of the dynamics and the dynamics naturally lead to a consideration of how to deal with technology so that it can be used to achieve human objectives. The unifying thought behind the book is that technological change has a systemic as well as an idiosyncratic aspect.

How much can innovation contribute to the quality of life? How can innovation be used to develop and market commercial products? These are two major questions considered by an international symposium of active researchers from the USA and Europe in the fields of industrial innovation which was held at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. The scope of the papers is extensive and embraces the whole process of innovation, from invention through development to commercialisation and diffusion. Some papers cover broad general issues such as the social and economic consequences of innovation and government policies towards innovation and research and development. Others provide highly specific and pragmatic advice upon the management of innovation and the development of marketing strategies to promote the speedy acceptance of new products and processes. Despite the diversity of the contributions, a number of clear themes emerge. These include the importance, for successful innovation, of clearly identifying user needs and the need for total immersion in the detail of an industry or market in order to understand the diffusion of an innovation.
